Hi to everyone. I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now, started my classes two weeks ago and completed my OW dives today. I had many questions during my pool sessions and lake dives, but all were answered by searching the forum. Thanks to all, I feel my training went much more smoothly reading the problems, and solutions other folks had. I live in Las Vegas Nv.(sorry no guest room) did my OW dives at Lake Mead ,(water temp 78, air temp 85, dont laugh any air temp under 90 is considered winter to a desert rat). The only problem I had at the lake was dropping my mask, not once but twice. The first time my instructor spent 20 minutes searching,(Less than 10 ft vis, very silty bottom). The second time he was ready for me, and found it quickley. Mask was on my arm both times and slipped off while putting on my fins, needless to say mask now goes on my face or around my neck first. Had such a good time with this course will be starting advanced OW next weekend. I am also planning a trip to Hawaii,(one week on the big island and one on Maui), late Jan or early Feb. Thanks again to everyone.

and welcome to the board from ARIZONA the all beach no ocean state.

I was just on a trip with a few divers doing their AOW you'll have fun if not you can't dive anymore

Scubabob...welcome to scubaboard! :D Pleased to have you a-board!

Congratulations on your O/W !

Hope to see you around the board soon !

Way to go SCUBAbob, and welcome to the finest board, SCUBA or otherwise on the net. I can relate to that "guest room" gig... "Welcome to sunny Orlando, now go home... " Hope you keep on learning and also start sharing with us as well.

Congrats Scubabob!

As for the mask incident you can always chalk that up to instructor training, as his search and recover skills are not tested regularly. And what fun would it be to instruct with no challenges to overcome!

Welcome to our extended family!

Glad to have you aboard and congradulations on your c card.

Chad

congratulations Scubabob, and welcome to the board.
Good luck on the AOW,
miked

Scubabob,
A big congrats on your OW cert and welcome to the best place to spend long surface intervals.
As to dropping your mask, I completely understand. Last month while doing my Rescue cert, I kept dropping mine when I would take it off to do the rescue scenario. Luckily, I found it every time. Hey, Good luck on your AOW and have fun!

Scubabobdiving!

And don't feel too bad about dropping your mask: Mucky Mask Recovery is a requirement for scuba diving instructors.

The Big Isle and Maui! Let me suggest a couple of dive shops:

On the Big Isle try Sandwich Isle Divers: http://www.sandwichisledivers.com
They are great with the whole spectrum of divers. With new divers they will take you under their wings and make your first dives fun and easy. They take 6 divers maximum on a dive! Steve, the owner/op, was trained as marine biologist and is a great source of information!

One Maui there are two shops I can recommend for "newbies":

Maui Dive Shop:
http://www.mauidiveshop.com
and
Lahaina Divers:
http://www.lahainadivers.com

They are both good for "newbies".

An outfit that tends to take more advanced divers is Ed Robinson's Diving Adventures. But I have seen new divers on his boat and they did just fine. The DM's went out of their ways to help. It is just that some people might feel a little intimidated in the presence of so many 100+ dive divers... If you do not feel that way, give Ed's a whirl: they are great!

So, welcome, again and remember the first rule of scuba: HAVE FUN!

I thought the first rule was to keep breathing...

The second was to look cool (my favorite)

Yours has to be at least third... But I think having fun is what it's all about!!!
