:14:I recentyly bought the SD 950. So far on land it takes great pics. Anyone out there using this camera underwater. If you are, post some feedback. Thank You:14:

I know it's a fairly new camera so it might take this thread a while to get going.

I used an Ixy for a long time, a couple of years and a couple of hundred dives. They are great cameras and it was a very hard decision to change to a G9. My advice would be that you can take stunning macro shots without too much effort, but getting quality wideangle shots requires good conditions and lots and lots of light.

To focus on macro life, always use flash and always get as close as you can. Don't use the zoom if possible as that will let less light into the camera and your shots will not be as good. Cropping your shots after diving is much more preferable to zooming, in my view.

Learn what the different focus modes are (point, multi-spot, centre) and how to use them and how to switch underwater.... The biggest issue I has was the camera not focussing well when the frame was very cluttered (like trying to focus on a squat lobster in a sea urchin, or a crab in a crack in a rock). One way to get around this is to focus on something an equivalent distance away in an easy area, semipress the shutter and lock in the focus and pan to the real subject. Not ideal and takes some practise but possible and works well in some situations.

These are the final shots I took with my Ixy, which is a couple of generations back from yours:

It looks like I made a good investment. Two questions. What type of set up are you using? Did you use a program to touch the pics post dive. Oh, did you use custom settings or did you use the auto mode? I guess thats three questions... duhh:dork2::lotsalove:

1)For a the setup, for now its just the basic case from Canon.

2)I do have PhotoShop Elements, but I think you could do the same with Picasa honestly.. I touched up some of them, and blew up a few, others are as is.. The 12MP really helps from a macro standpoint.

and the bonus 3rd question :)

3) The biggest thing, is for macro, set to manual, auto everything and set the flash ON. For others set to manual, and turn the flash OFF, and adjust the white balance often (every 5 feet or so at depth, or when sun conditions change).. let me know if you dont know what I am talking about here..

What I would like to do with it eventually (the bottom image is a SD950 IS)

Canon for some reason didn't think that forcing a flash or disabling flash should be allowed in "auto" mode.
So in order to force flash ON or force flash OFF, you have to rotate the dial to "manual".
If you don't change anything else, it is the same as "auto". You can then set the
flash permanently on if you want the flash to fire every time.

Why is he shooting in auto mode anyway? Surely the best mode is SCN>Underwater? That's what I did all my shooting with on the Ixus/Ixy.
