The only reason I put them in the pouches is the color... while my life is more valuable than lead, and I would ditch without worries. At least in the yellow pouches they might be found depending on the depth... but it doesn't really matter. Either way, test that they fall.

There is also one reason not to put them in the yellow pouches. It gives you the option of unzipping the weight pocket and dumping just one weight.

Another reason to use the weight pouches is small weights - esp soft ones- can work their way out of the pocket through the ripcord. While I prefer the official pouches, old socks or laundry bags will also work.
