Well not just back, I've been back a week and been so busy with work and a wedding to go to I haven't had time to post. Me and the family (wife and 11yr old son) went down on the 9th and stayed though the 25th. We all did our Basic open water with Coconut Tree Divers and had a great time. We were especially happy with our Instructor Matt who was great with us, especially with my wife and son.
We stayed the first few days at Coconut Tree Cabins which were great as it was just across the street from the shop. We then spent a week in a house we rented which was just up the hill behind Pura Vida. The last 5 nights we spent out at the Seagrape, which was very nice.
I also did some diving with Reef Gliders and also had a fantastic time there, I did my Advanced with Daniel, who was great. Had the most fantastic night dive with him, we spent most of the dive in the most amazing bio luminescence.
I can't say enough good things about the trip, the political situation had no apparent effect on the island. If anyone says not to go because of it, don't listen. We saw that most places were suffering from cancellations caused by all the negative news about the situation. So if you cancel your trip not only is it your loss, its putting the hurt on the people who are trying to make a living there.
Took a while to get used to the heat, as we are from the Northwest. Just make sure you have a place with A/c if in West End, (although out on the point at the Seagrape was nice and breezy). The sand fleas and mosquitoes were not the problem I had believed they would be, in fact while I did get bitten by sand fleas I never felt them and they never itched, same for my wife and son. We tried Deet, Cutters with Picaridin, and Cactus Juice. The only one that didn't seem to work to well was the Cactus Juice.
Anyway it was an amazing trip, and we are all hooked on diving and already trying to plan a second trip back as soon as possible. Many thanks to all at Coconut Tree, and Reef Gliders, I can't say enough good about either of these operations. Thanks Marco for letting us borrow your truck to move our stuff. And thanks again to Matt for being such an awesome instructor. We will be back soon.
