Well not just back, I've been back a week and been so busy with work and a wedding to go to I haven't had time to post. Me and the family (wife and 11yr old son) went down on the 9th and stayed though the 25th. We all did our Basic open water with Coconut Tree Divers and had a great time. We were especially happy with our Instructor Matt who was great with us, especially with my wife and son.

We stayed the first few days at Coconut Tree Cabins which were great as it was just across the street from the shop. We then spent a week in a house we rented which was just up the hill behind Pura Vida. The last 5 nights we spent out at the Seagrape, which was very nice.

I also did some diving with Reef Gliders and also had a fantastic time there, I did my Advanced with Daniel, who was great. Had the most fantastic night dive with him, we spent most of the dive in the most amazing bio luminescence.

I can't say enough good things about the trip, the political situation had no apparent effect on the island. If anyone says not to go because of it, don't listen. We saw that most places were suffering from cancellations caused by all the negative news about the situation. So if you cancel your trip not only is it your loss, its putting the hurt on the people who are trying to make a living there.

Took a while to get used to the heat, as we are from the Northwest. Just make sure you have a place with A/c if in West End, (although out on the point at the Seagrape was nice and breezy). The sand fleas and mosquitoes were not the problem I had believed they would be, in fact while I did get bitten by sand fleas I never felt them and they never itched, same for my wife and son. We tried Deet, Cutters with Picaridin, and Cactus Juice. The only one that didn't seem to work to well was the Cactus Juice.

Anyway it was an amazing trip, and we are all hooked on diving and already trying to plan a second trip back as soon as possible. Many thanks to all at Coconut Tree, and Reef Gliders, I can't say enough good about either of these operations. Thanks Marco for letting us borrow your truck to move our stuff. And thanks again to Matt for being such an awesome instructor. We will be back soon.

Hey bud, it appears that you are certified now, so you can change your profile.
Welcome to the club!
Thanks for posting.
It is always good to check up on operators.

We are contemplating a trip to AKR Oct 31-Nov. 7, and I admit the political situation has kept me from pulling the trigger. Hate to spend the money up front and have it all fall apart. I figured that the political stuff would mostly affect the mainland, though. Any other feedback for me? How about diving that time of year? This will be the first time I've gone that late... From what I've read we could have rough seas on that side of the island that time of year. Any help would be appreciated. (don't crucify me...I'm new here)

No need for fear of that, but if you did a quick :search: all your questions about the political situation will be answered. What will not be answered will be your decision on what to do about what you learn. So far, the Islands have been removed from any of the shouting matches that had occurred on the mainland some 90 miles South.

AKR might be four miles down the road from West End, but it is a universe away. Roatan is an unusual place in that different offerings separated by very little distance are so radically distinct.

If and when storms come, they track across the Caribbean basin from the "bottom right" in a Northwesterly direction. If they continue on a NW track, as they cross into the basin near Venezuala, they point up towards Cozumel.

Thus, if they do track that way (and not veer up towards Texas or Louisina), yes, the Northern coast of Roatan (and the West End) will get a sound thrashing by the wave action spinning off of these storms as they pass to the North.

Thanks much, Roatan Man. (I like the sound of that...) We do love Roatan...and it's hard to beat their bargains for a dive trip. We will get our group together and make some decisions. I'm still thinking I may be in a hammock at AKR come November. :)

Aeronca - thanks for your report! Very helpful and informative! I'm heading down for my first Roatan trip on Aug 15, also staying in West End, also diving with Reef Gliders. Your mention of the bio luminescence already has me planning a night dive for sure!

We'll be on the south side of the island at Fantasy Island from October 10 - 18th and then we're moving over to AKR on the north side from October 18 - 25. Buy your travel insurance just in case something happens and have a great time!
