I did my open water checkout when I was 13. On the third day we ended up at 80' on Santa Rosa wall. Granted this was with the YMCA and my OW checkout was back in 1988, but I don't see a problem with it.

No brain damage, no growth problems, no physical problems.

Ohh, I just have to say something, because I think somebody should.
I find the content in this thread concerning.

Garyfotodiver I can assure you there is such no thing as a free country in today's world, but you are absolutely are entitled to your own opinion.
Fortunately or unfortunately (you pick one) your children are not entitled to the actions of your opinion.

That is all I'll say, I'm not trying to start an arguement but provoke some deeper thinking (no pun intended!).

Dive safely!!

cheers:14:

Hmmmm ... last time I checked, Chicago was in the USA and it 'is' a free country.

We've got elections, carry guns and own stuff. The only industrialized western nation without national health care. Scary. Makes you wonder how we all survived to adulthood.

There I go again being the ugly American.

Drive on, Gary.

Sorry, I didn't mean to take a jab at Americans! Some of my best friends are American and the ugly American generalization is a load of #$*&!!! I was merely stating that you are not free to do whatever you want without consequence. It very much depends on your class in society, race, sexuality, religion, sex, etc!!! There is no such thing as a free country at present, be it Canada, the USA ... or Holland. Besides the point, I was not intending to take a swipe at anyone's beliefs, nationality, etc. I am genuinely sorry.

I simply indicated that one's decision for their child, is not the child's decision. I'm sure we all had hoped our mothers smoked and drank excessivly when we where in utero.

Peace.:14:

No kidding! Well, after raising five children, ranging in age from 26 to 9, I HAVE given the matter much thought. And I have written about this matter before.

The USA is a free country in that we have more personal liberty than ANY other country in the world. And here, we ARE entitled to an opinion. When I am in Canada, I follow Canadian law, and I expect Canadians to do the same when they are here in the USA.

My children are my responsibility and I am prepared to put my life on the line for theirs at anytime. I have more knowledge, experience, and understanding than my children in certain areas, and I use it.

When somebody provides me reliable data contrary to my understanding, I change my way. I have not seen any regarding this issue. I have discussed it with several instructors, researched on the i-net, did a good job of it. Found NOTHING!!

So we dive. I'm planning a vacation trip to Wreck Valley this summer, back to my diving origins. It should be fun to do Shark River Inlet with my 15 year-old. If I do any off-shore diving, it will be very easy dives, as we have not done difficult wrecks yet.

Happy Diving yourself!
