I know where there is a meg right now for 5k. I know where there are two JJ's for 4k. I know where there is a rEvo mccr for 5k. And that's just for starters.

If you can afford an SCR then you can afford a mCCR.

That is 100% hogwash. Total BS. A good SCR unit will cost a lot less than even the most basic, used mCCR. Training will be less expensive, the operation will be simpler, and maintenance will be less involved and less costly. Someone could be diving SCR including training for under $2500. You're not going to come close to that on mCCR, and certainly not on eCCR.

There are reasons to choose SCR and reasons to choose CCR. It all depends on the type of diving.

New SCR for $2500 including training? I call bs.

Used MCCR including training for $5500 doable. In fact, I could probably get used ECCR done for $4500 including training.

USD? Where?

Someone could be diving SCR including training for under $2500.
I've seen Dräger units go for less than 700 bucks and I did a a course on the Dolphin more then 10 year ago for less than 300 Euros (never used the Dolphin since that course)... so, 2.5k sounds way high, especially considering how much the Dolphin sucks.

LOL.... I know where there's some rebreathers for free. Doesn't mean I'd dive them. LOL

What's the deal with those JJs Peter?

I just checked, apparently the Euro is gaining strength finally. So it would be 4500 USD. :) They are listed on CCRExplorer website

Here is a Facebook page that often has units for sale. You just have to do your research and keep your eyes open and you can find a good unit. When you decide on what unit you are wanting to go with find a good instructor and they can often help you ensure you are getting a good unit. Price is always something to consider, but remember you are buying life support equipment cheaper is not always better.

I'm the one calling BS on you, Peter. The JJs you are talking about on CCRX and FB are listed in GBP, not Euro. They're about $6k each.

And I have a barely used (maybe 15 dives) GEM that I've been trying to sell. Far superior to the Dolphin or Azimuth. I also think it is a much better SCR choice than the far more expensive Explorer. Someone could buy that GEM for $1500 and then get a couple of days training that has to be less than $1000. The GEM is a great unit for those dives and places that CCR is inconvenient, overkill, or way too expensive. It is perfect for those with easy access to nitrox, but not boosted oxygen.

OP, as you can see, questions asked on open forums often degenerate into pointless bickering. In answer to your query, may I suggest two routes to follow?

First, get a good book on rebreathers in general. Personally, I used Mel Clark's book "Rebreathers Simplified", but there are others as well. And do call Mel while you are reading her book, she'll talk to you, at least she did to me.

Second, schedule a rebreather experience. This is a try dive under close supervision, and will give you a good feeling for how a rebreather feels and acts. Several instructors come to mind that I would recommend: Mel Clark, Ron Benson, and Gregg Stanton to name a few. Those 3 teach on several different units and are highly experienced. There are plenty of other folks out there, but those are the 3 that I know.

I am am not a CCR instructor, but I am a well experienced CCR diver. I'm purposely not naming the rig I dive, as that won't be helpful in your quest.
