I just don't log dives
Once again this year, the Wrinkles shore dive for July fell onto Catalina Island.

If I had a quarter for every dive this year where 'Dette and I intended to shoot some clear water scooter shots, I could part at Vets for a year. The water locally has been yucky on the best of days all year.

The water wasn't in the best of condition this weekend, - surely not as nice as last Fall, but it was the best water we've seen this year.

Here are some Scooter shots from this weekend.

After about 200 scooter dives, you still make every dive fun, Chica. No betta team mate anywhere.

Photos below. Remember, click on the bar above the photo to make it larger. Full gallery from the weekend is here: Linky

Enjoy.

THE MONKEY RIG - all shots here were taken in the DSS Super Scooter 12 Monkey Diving Rig. Detail on the rig can be seen here: OOT OOT

SS12 - comin' at ya!

Shooting the Kelp arch.

I guess she likes it!

Later in the afternoon, when the sun was higher, we moved in shallow - not far in front of the steps. I wanted to get all three elements - the bottom, the middle and the top of the water as she shooted by. Nice shot, but I wasn't low enough to the ground....

We moved in shallower (now in about 8 or 9 feet of water.) I found a hollow in the bottom and climbed in, got on my belly and rested the cam on the lip of the hollow. Claudette came about for the shot and totally corked - I mean she popped right out (you can see the circle of bubbles where she flew out of the water!) She fought it off, pointed the nose of the scoot at me and blasted inches over my head. That's the Casino building on the left.

FREE DIVING SCOOTERING
Here's the drop in. Although it looks pretty mellow here, it was not. Sunday was very windy - but Claudette pushed through. She must have swallowed gallons of sea water as we shot these, as the chop was pretty severe for a free diver.

Ninja free Diver, through the kelp

Emerging from the kelp

Playing in Mid-Water. Play in the free diving gear is MUCH faster than in scuba gear. On this run, she did about three spins and almost took my head off!

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Thanks Ken!!

Stunning, simply stunning.

Number one and number TWO!!!

Other-worldly, ethereal.

Amazing how Dette can hold her breath so long, or do you always shoot her on descent? ;)

yes, how long are you guys holding your breath?

(lol, I realize that is right up there with "how much money do you make?")

or

"How deep?"

I'm the safety diver on these free dive shots.

I'm in the water on Scuba. I have a scooter, clipped off (makes shooting in midwater just a joy...)

Seeing as I never take my eyes off of her, its best for me to be on Scuba in case something happens.

We're not deep - I'm at about 25 feet, and she's usually over me. For the top-down shots I was probably at 15 and she was going under the kelp at 20 or so.

I can fire off about 5 to 7 shots each pass, and she's to the point now where she can make TWO passes. So I'd guess the breath hold is about 90 seconds. Sometimes more, sometimes less - depends on how rough it is on top.

It was pretty rough for these dives. But we still got two passes almost every time.

Wait until you see the next Scooter Free Dive series. Just off the hook.

You should be hawking those first two. Centerfold material.

The surface conditions can really make it tough to *breath up* and get relaxed before your descent.

can't wait to see the rest!

How did you get the kelp to look so soft and yet keep her so sharp? (#2) Is that natural or are you selectively treating different areas of the image? Because that is a very beautiful effect. Your lighting looks supberb. I hate you. Those images really make me want to be there.

Is she not relying on a snorkel on the free dives? ..and what do you guys do at the surface?
