I am PADI AOW and EA certified, will be visiting San Jose area next month with a friend, who is interested in Discover Scuba Diving. I went to "Gordo Banks" with East Cape Explorers out of San Jose last summer, dove the Cabo San Lucas marine park on multiple occasions, would prefer to avoid the crowds this time, consider local San Jose diving for the first time.

Is there decent local diving in the San Jose area, or are we better off dealing with the Cabo marina?

My daughter and I had a great time diving with East Cape Explorers last August. Most days, we were the only divers on the boat. On the one day that we were not, the other divers were students with their own instructor, so we still had a privately guided dive. Can't avoid the crowds much more than that!

We had some very nice dives with them, and some very good visibility. Rocky bottom, but decent enough fish life. Very personalized service.

If you do not rent a vehicle, please do consider the cost of a cab there and back from the San Jose hotel zone. When we were there, it was US$15 from San Jose to La Playita, and $20 from La Playita back to the San Jose hotels. I have seen reports that the fares may have gone up, or it could be that fares differ by high and low season. If you are doing much diving, the cab fares can and will add up...
