Johns Island diver dies
A male diver, a resident of Johns Island, died Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Personnel from the Coast Guard, Fish and Wildlife and San Juan County Sheriff's Office responded after a report of a scuba diver in distress was received about 2:15 p.m. The Coast Guard put out a Marine Request for Assistance Call to all boats in the area. According to a friend of the victim, a boat responded by rushing to the scene of the accident and one of the people from the boat, who had a pony tank and some other dive gear, brought the diver to the beach.
The friends are very appreciative of the man from the boat who was able to bring the diver to the beach. "He went above and beyond any normal response by jumping in and bringing the diver to shore where they attempted to save his life. By quickly bringing the diver to the shore, the attempt to save the diver was possible and the possibility of a long search for the diver, if there had been a delay in bringing him to shore, was avoided."
The body was transported to Friday Harbor and turned over to the county coroner for autopsy.
