IF you can delay your visit into February, mid to late, our experience has always been good. The water is still cool and the SI can be chilly but the weather otherwise, for us at least, has been near perfect. We have been very fortunate in no lost diving days and the temp on island is very pleasant. And still no mosquitoes! If you were there this past July I think their numbers and voracity was near legendary.

I wouldn’t hesitate to go in Jan with the right expectations - chances are higher of missing a day or two of diving due to weather. Diving condition are favorable, probably see Eagle Rays, weather is good but on the edge of cool and wet. Wouldn’t go if I only had 1 week but if I have at least 2 weeks I’d goin Jan. I’d go to Coz every month except July-Aug, just too hot & humid for me. My top 3 favorite times are:
1) Oct-Nov
2) April- May
3) Jan-Feb

I've made several trips in the beginning of Feb & 2 or 3 that started a few days before Feb 1. All but last years trip were for 2 weeks but last winters trip was a 3 week trip & had the best weather of any trip with no days of diving lost to bad weather. On average however it's been 2 days lost per trip due to high winds & waves. Water temps are right around 80 F at the surface & 2 to 4 degrees colder at depth. The majority wear wetsuits but a few of us northerners get by without.

January 2016 and January 2017, we were able to dive every single day.
This January, very different story. We had 50% port closures and the weather did not cooperate.
Hope this helps.

In my opinion January is the worst month. Been here 25 years. May-June or Sept-Oct are best.

But of course, diving Cozumel is still a whole lot better than a lot of things you could be doing in January. :D

Compare port closures and daily high temperature between Jan and June. I like Jan temps better than June.

are you talking about air or water temps? In both cases January is far worse. The only reason January is popular is because it is so miserable in Chicago.
