Going to Cabo San Lucas in mid-January and I read that many favor at least 5 mm wetsuits and that Cabo Pulmo can get very windy, with much reduced viz and chop. Should I just stick with the local trips near CSL?

The wildlife sounds awesome at CP, but if it's miserable (and my GF gets motion sick easily) then maybe we should just do the close dives at CSL? And what dive shops do you recommend? We're joining some friends in CSL so I'm wondering if we should rent and drive to CP or book some other arrangement with an operator? The whale sharks and life out at CP sound more my speed but don't want to fight the elements....

Thanks!

See my report from November. Cabo Pulmo can be tricky - http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/mexico/313110-los-cabos-trip-report-nov-09-a.html.

I did two dives there and saw incredible sea life. There were huge schools of fish and many different species. I saw a school of jacks so big it blocked out the sun. I did say also that the ride there is rough. If she gets sick easily, the car drive will bother her as it is through a mountain area. The small boats are also a problem.

I liked CSL very much. There are limited dive sites but the "corridor" can make up for it. Diving is easy and ride is short. It is "hit or miss" there but that speaks for all diving. I'd opt for CSL with some corridor dives to save your GF from any discomfort.

thanks for the tips and the detailed trip report. I'm surprised at the dive costs! Guess we'll probably stick with the close trips. maybe with sunset.

Cabo Pulmo can be very windy with poor visibility at this time of the year, the best will be from May to Nov.
I do tours to Cabo Pulmo on the season only.
