Many years ago, my friend and I conducted a series of experiments on his extremely docile and good-natured cat to find the answer to this question. In our experiments we simply held the cat by her feet and let go. Our exhaustive tests showed that the cat would land on her feet when dropped with her back to the ground from any height down to about 2 inches. Above that height she could rotate around and land on her feet with amazing dexterity. These results may not be conclusive, since our tests did not include any attempts to impart any rotational moments to the cat before releasing her.
So sue me. I was eight.

Not a thing. I take them diving with me all the time! Who says cat's don't like water. Suuure, they fight for the first couple of minutes but after that they get all relaxed and quit fighting entirely once you bring them under.
