Earlier storm path predictions had Ivan taking a northerly turn by now, which it hasn't done. The storm continues to move to the west and preparations for the worst are beginning here in Cozumel.

The Harbor MAster closed the port about an hour ago until further notice.

Gas station lines are around the block, grocery stores are packed, and many boats are being pulled out of the water, and all are being secured for the storm.

Let's hope that Ivan takes that northerly turn and fizzles out in the Gulf of Mexico sparing anyone else from his wrath.

Cayman Islands are taking a severe beating as we speak!

Looking at the size of Ivan, I'm not surprised that the harbor master took that precaution.

I think I originally got this site from this board:

Tropical Storm Tracking

but its great for tracking storms.

Looks like Cozumel is still going to miss the worst of it (the eye will pass quite a bit to the east) but it's going to get wet.

A group of us from Ketchikan, Alaska are headed to Coz on Thursday. This will be our first trip to cozumel, and my first dive trip anywhere. Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going. I will be hoping that everyone will be safe.

Thanks Christi!

We're officially booked, and we saved $200.00 off of the price as of 3 days ago.......Ivan?? Maybe.

Hopefully the hotel will still be there!

Please keep us updated. My friends that are travelling with us (First time Coz-o-holics) are sweating bullets :-)

Steve

My level of respect for this storm and for the people who have already experienced his wrath has just increased tenfold.

We are only now on the very, very outside of the storm and it is raining sideways. Wind gusts are strong and I can literally hear it howling. If this is any warning of what is to come, I cannot even imagine what it is going to be like...even if the eye misses us.

I cannot imagine what the people in Florida with Charley and Frances, and the people in Cayman/Jamaica, etc. with Ivan went through. Looks like we are going to at least get a taste of it.

I've been here for several years now, but this is the strongest storm that's come close since I've been here. We had Isidore cross right over us last year, but what we are experiencing now is already worse.

I think I can say now that I am scared!

I am watching the Weather Channel and they say the Huricane Center expects Ivan to pass through the Yucatan Channel, and then make land fall somewhere between Talahasse and New Orleans. Winds currently near the eye wall peaking at 150 MPH, pressure is 916 mb. This storm is almost a CAT 5. Even a brush with this beast would be a wild ride. I am booked in Coz mid november, hope to see the island and everyone on it, in good shape. Good luck.

Terry

UPDATED: As of 11:50 pm EDT Ivan is a CAT 5 hurricane with surface winds at 160 MPH and winds aloft recorded at 200+ MPH, pressure in the eye is 917 mb and the eye is 28 miles wide. Projected path still between Cuba and Mexico as it travels WNW at 9 MPH. When you see the video of the destruction on Jamaica, remember that it never made land fall there, just skirted the southern coast.

Christi,

Hold on tight. So far over here in Paamul things look pretty dark and ugly but very little rain or wind. We have battoned down the hatches just incase.

Keith in 2000, Iris, 2001, seems every year we're greeted with at least one. But Isidore (2002) went north of Coz and west to hammer Cancun and the northern Yucatan. Lili came thru on just about the same track Ivan is expected to traverse, harbor was closed one day and there were weird currents that day! (shore diving)
We'll say our prayers for you and all our friends there. 19 days to go, I'm sure there'll be another one to greet us then. At least the weather in July '04 was nice. ;)

Claudette , July last year, centered on Coz but was no where near the strength of what's brewing.
