:DHello all, today was my first dive underwater breathing from a tank and reg:14:.

We had planned on a shore dive yesterday, day one of my OWC course, but the conditions were just not so good, and we spent all day in the classroom:11:.

So today we did the usual pool tasks, and required tests, and had a heap of fun indeed.

When the teacher asked about my air level, it was obvious that i was the class "air pig", i had used 50-60 bar more than anyone else:blinking:

Not that my smoking had anything to do with this of course:no

I did however, not have a smoke for more than 8 hours, a bit of a record for me, and it felt good not to have one being way too occupied with the excitement and thrills of scuba diving.

Once we had finished in the pool and packed our gear up, we got a de-brief from the instructor and we were asked if we had any questions, i asked for twins next week:shakehead

A great first day under the water and a great team teaching us.

Hi Trevor,

There's nothing official about your first time breathing underwater. Take heart that you will most certainly improve with practice. You can find lots of threads and info on how to do better such as breathe slow and deep, eliminate wasted motion and take your time.

You acknowledge that you are a smoker and that damage won't be undone in 8 hours. Amazingly if you search you can find a thread in the last 12 months where some purport that smoking reduces your need for air since you body is accustomed to low levels of asphxiation. Go figure.:confused:

I'm no that experienced myself but when I look back at my log book at my air use from those certification dives all I can think is "HOLY CR*P!". :D

One suggestion, you should probably refrain from doing any open water dives until you have completed your certification. Doesn't matter if you are with your instructor or not. You just need a little time in the pool to focus on the tasks of regulator and mask manipulation and buoyancy, which you can't do as well when swimming along looking at fishes.
 
You do not get a refund at the dive shop for the air that you did not breathe....

It will get better with practice.
 
Congratulations Trevor. . . that proves you were the most excited dive student. Running through your air only shows your excitement ( not fear, I hope) When you start going below the surface, everything is exciting, as you gain more experience, your bubble blowing slows down and the tank lasts longer. Hopefully this doesn't mean a loss of interest and excitement. . . only a measure of your comfort. On my first Ocean resort trip, I had over 1,000 dives and usually would use one tank of air for 2 tanks for some of my partners. . . The first tank of air with coral and colorful fish and 100 foot visabilty. Well I was out of air when everyone else was.

Just blow bubbles and enjoy. . . With experience the bubbles get smaller.
 
i think those of us that acknowledge being air-hogs are far more vigilent in watching our gauges and should be congratulated :D

Congratulations "air pig"!:rofl3: You will get better with practice. Bouyancy control, yoga breathing techinques and practice have made all contributed to better air consumption for me. Oh yeah and I don't smoke. ;)
 
Smoking has nothing to do with air consumption ...... for me :D

I am a smoker and nowadays I am the one with the most air left in my tank at the end of the dive .....;)

You'll get better with practice, I'm sure :14:
 
... and how can I not having a couple of those "stoogies" when in Cuba
