Hi
I posted back here a few weeks ago. We will be moving to MD (hopefully Rockville or Gaithersburgh area) this summer. Looking to find some folks to dive with as well as some suggestions for realtors (we'll probably rent for a year before buying), neighboorhoods, that kind of thing. Access to public transportation is real plus. Thanks

Don

Will be working near American University. We have priced the rentals and know what we are getting into. Still plan to eat the rent for a year before deciding on a place to buy. THanks for the input

Sent you a PM.

The cool thing about that area is Air Jamaica flies out of BWI...and you know where they go after San Juan? Bonaire!

There is a dive shop very near Gaithersburg (never been there), also the Brass Anchor in Frederick. If you go out towards Annapolis there is a dive shop there and one in a small town just past Bowie (Scuba Colony) that has very reasonable fills and service charges.

Quarries are Millbrook, Lake Rawlings (VA - about 150 miles), Bainbridge (around 125 I think), and the ones further out like Dutch Springs. Plenty of sea diving out of VA Beach and NC.

Congrats! As others have mentioned, housing in MD is expensive. In terms of diving, you have your choice of several quarries, as well as ocean diving. Also, the local shops are always running trips to FL, NC, etc.

Hope to see you at the local diving hole soon.

Mike

Welcome! If you're going to be renting for a year, you might consider being closer to American and Metro, say in Bethesda or near Grosvenor or even Chevy Chase. Buying housing there is brutal (2 BR ranches going from 800K) but rents might be reasonable. Don't rule out the District either: it's a rent-controlled renters' paradise, although condo-ization is depleting rental housing.

Ok, enough on the housing.... how soon after you get here are you going to be ready to dive?

First of all thanks for all the advice. I will be in Arizona (business) for the first week of August and arrive in DC the second week. Start date on my new job is Aug 15th - so hopefully be ready to dive by that weekend. Eventually (not sure when) I'll be working three 12 hour shifts with some weekends - so - I may also be available to dive on some weedays too. I'll be in touch

Keep in mind that you will be arriving here in the worst weather of the year - everyone who can leave DC in August does:). It will get better.
