Someone mentioned Islamorada Key as a good base to work out of if on a budget. I will be RV'ing it, so am looking for a camp park more than a motel to stay at. (reasonable rates hopefully) Would this key make a nice centrally located base or what do you recommend for an RV'er? BTW, how is the diving around this Key?

Thanks

There is no Islamorada Key. Islamorada is the name of a town, not a key.

I have no info on camping, but diving off Islamorada is excellent. Don't miss the Eagle, my favorite dive.

Just got back from Key Largo Kampground, very clean, not very crowded. Most sites owned by permanent owners, seemed to be mostly snowbirds. Enjoyed diving Key Largo with Silent World(I'm novice level), made side trip to Looe Key with Siren Divers, also highly recommended. Email me with any questions, enjoy!!

Islamorada and the surrounding area has excellent diving, especially in Key Largo and Tavernier. In that part of the Keys you have great reefs and wrecks like the Speigel Grove, Duane, Bibb, Eagle, etc. South of Islamorada, like Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Key West also have great dives (Looe Key Reef, Adolphus Busch, etc.). In general, there is more variety in the Upper Keys than the Lower Keys. Either way, it's very good. Have fun.

I have not been down to the keys since 99. I would appreciate any information on RV camprounds, that allow pets, good for diving and may have a boat ramp. I would also be running my compressor to fill tanks and would not a snow bird camp that would complain.

Try looking into the campground at pennekamp state park,Key Largo. I like diving with {Im surw I'll mess up their spelling} Quescience diving at mm 103 in Key Largo. Great people, small boats, no crowds.

Islamorada is actually on Plantation Key which would have been hard to know as it's not advertised that well. The above post are correct. The only two campgrounds I know of are Key Largo Kampground, which is behind K-Mart, and Pennekamp State Park. There use to be a large on at MM97 bayside, but it was recently bought, closed, and now being turned into yet another Condo.

Good Diving,
