My wife and I are going to Isla Mujeres for a week and we are wondering if anyone has some recommendations for a good dive operator.

Welcome to Scubaboard!

I brought as many as 15 of my dive buddies from Texas with me to Isla Mujeres. Both dive operators took good care of them.

Enjoy Isla Mujeres!

For its size there are some really good places to eat there (not that you asked :) )

I've been diving 4 times in the last 2 years in Isla Mujeres. We love diving with Casa Buceo. True pros. There are some pretty nice shallower dives there that are like 45 feet and they let you dive your tank so we had some nice 70 minute dives! I had a back injury so the drift dives in Cozumel I love were off limits and it was pretty , simple dives with few other divers in the water. There is one dive there that there are a dozen or so sunken pots that came off a boat 200 years ago that look like smiling faces. We have both airBnB and stayed at hotels a bit south of town and rented gold carts to get around. There are some great restaurants. One should not miss after dinner drinks at Oscar's halfway down the island where every golf cart that passed shouts "OSCARSSSSSS"

We considered the golf cart unnecessary. We only went to town and back once a day and taxis are cheap and usually plentiful. A few times we got picked up by taxis that already had passengers and it only cost us something like 20-30 pesos to get to town from the middle of the island. A couple of times (net necessarily on Isla Mujeres) we ended up paying full fare and the other passengers got a free ride via los gringos  We don't mind that a bit--we're usually talking about 50 pesos or so ($2.50 US). So, basically, we were paying about $5/day compared to about $50/day to rent a cart. Plus we did some walking and got to see more than you might see going by at 30 mph.

There were a couple of times when we were walking and tried to hail a taxi but they were all full. If you want to be sure and get one you go to the taxi stand near the ferry terminal.

We stay out by the Tortugas Farm where we rent a little casita with a private beach. There is nothing in walking distance and cabs are few and far between. We needed the golf cart to go to and from the dive shop, to the supermarket to buy food for our casita, going to baseball games with the locals, loved just going for sunset drives around the island stopping here and there. We spend more time around La Gloria than in the North Beach area and the ability to just get out and go when and where we want at anytime is priceless for us. I get the 50 bucks a day is a lot, but weekly rates are negotiable and we seem to save a lot by renting a house and cooking for ourselves. If we go to town we generally park over by the basketball court or municipal market and walk around North Beach by foot. Don't miss the Fenix Beach Club on Sunday afternoons for great free salsa dancing and Leche de Tigre the great hangover cure. I just adore the island. This year we are renting a house in Playa del Carmen and there we walk everywhere.
