Anyone been diving Isla Mujeres recently? I hear this is THE place to see whale sharks.

How's the vis in April?

What is there to do topside on the island?

Thanks.

Barry

When I was last there you could only snorkel with the whale sharks. It was a great experience, that being said there were a lot of people acting like idiots and grabbing onto their dorsal fins, attempting to ride etc.

This being said we were with over 100 of the them. That in itself was unbelievable.

Topside on the island is mostly hanging out in shallow water and on the beach, a few beach bars and places to grab a cold drink. Good for a day but not a destination IMO.

Visibility will be limited due to the plankton/ krill obviously with whale sharks present. Probably 20-30' in the first 10'

The whale shark season runs from June through mid-September.
You can snorkel with them, and you can free dive, but I don't think you're supposed to be on SCUBA.
I don't know that there is much of anything to do topside. Nor are there any really topnotch dive sites specific to the island.
Personally, I'd stay in Cancun, dive the excellent sites there, and do a day trip out to see the whale sharks.
