I think we need to look at a simpler issue here that I hear about commonly. If a fellow diver asks are you OK, and you reply yes and really are not it can leave to further problems. When it is understood all is OK, extra time / care is not taken to prevent other incidents.
Also, I agree that your divemaster did not to a very good job, but it is important for everyone to communicate back with the DM and signal that you need more time instead of rushing it. I sometimes have to do this too since I am like your husband and have a slow ear too.
