I lived in Warwick, I use Giant Stride Dive shop on Warwick ave in Warwick, Red is the owner and a great guy. I am up for diving anytime, just drop me an email. I have a dry suit but haven't used it yet.

The Rouges are a great group of divers and will dive anytime. Just watch the yahoo group and email the group with in minutes you will have at least one person wanting to dive with you.

Gerry, let me know when your here and we will dive. Look forward to meeting you all.

Hi Everyone, I will be in the Rhode Island area the end of July and would like to try some diving up there. I am looking for a dive shop to dive with or someone who don't mind diving with someone that has very little salt water dives. I have e-mailed some dive shops up there and have not recieved any replys. Thanks for any help or suggestions, Gerry

Send me a PM I know some nice easy places to dive in RI.

Hi Guamgirl. I live & dive locally. I too have been diving in Palau. Sadly we will not be seeing any Giant Mantas or Mandarin fish diving locally.... You may however see large Torpedo Rays, some Northern Puffer Fish or find some old Coke/Pepsi bottles. I love diving locally and would be thrilled to dive in the winter. Most cringe at the thought of it, but there are interesting creatures to see in the coldest months of winter. I sent you a PM too.

Sean - I know - nothing like 82 F top to bottom and 100+ visibility! I'm not convinced I'll even enjoy diving here in RI, but I won't know until I try it, right?

Orion - I live in south county, and I have no gear for our water temps. I'd pretty much need to rent everything except maybe my regulator to dive here. My BC is a super slim, meant-for-traveling and warm-water-diving, that won't even hold the weight I'd need here. I'd love to hear recommendations about dive shops to look into for rentals.

your mask and snorkel will be fine. also, if you are any good with weighting yourself and buoyancy control you BC should work - wetsuites do not compress that much, especially if you don't go deep; drysuits allow for inflation so no issue there. If you plan to do more than an occasional, planned dive i'd advise to get yourself at least one tank, preferably steel; if you have a decent RMV than you should be able to get away with an LP72 (i do, though i tend to grab an LP104 since the price of the fill is almost identical and i get twice the bottom time), plenty of them around and most of them cheap as dirt.
inlandivers in leicester, ma has some brand new equipment on sale, check the closeouts at inlandivers.com, prices seem decent (i haven't bought anything in the last 2 years so my definition of decent might be off).
the regulator will be fine as long as you have a decent middle of the line unit from a reputable manufacturer, i dive a mares abys or an old USD conshhelf and both are just fine, regardless of the weather. get some decent size fins if you don't have them, sometimes there's current out there, not always when and where you expect it.
also, keep an eye on craiglist for some weights, you can find them sometimes for less than your daily coffee.
that would be about all regarding equipment.
i don't dive RI too much (mostly for weatherill) but there's plenty of diving spots just a little north in MA, starting with white horse beach (and surroundings) and continuing to cape ann. also, there's plenty of nice dive spots that are accessible by boat only (out of question until weather warm up, at least for me). you should see the "lobster colony" off Salisbury MA, ....

I answer all emails sent to my site and apologize if I didn't get back to you but maybe yours got stuck in a spam filter. I get overwhelmed with junk emails from lottery winnings, inheritances, erectile dysfunction ads and orders to Singapore, Austrailia, etc. etc. It gets crazy when I get back from a dive trip after a week and there are 460 emails with only about 25 of them truly business related. My spam filters are pretty agressive so if anyone emails me and I don't get back to them in a day or 2 please call us. For anyone interested Giant Stride Dive Shop is doing a Coastal Clean-up for Earth Week called Giant Strides Earthday Party at Ft Adams in Newport and all are welcome to attend and do thier part to keep our ocean and shoreline clean. There will be diving for those that want to get wet followed by a cookout. This is a great way to meet the RI Diving Community.
Calm Seas and Great Viz,
Red

This sure is a dead forum! Someone should change the name to Dive Rhode Island. Is the ocean cleanup still going on 25 April. I plan on coming down with a buddy but I don't want to if it has been cancelled. I haven't heard any mention of it for awhile.
