Why would you restart this 2.5 year old thread? The OP hasn't even visited the forum since he posted on June 17, 2020.

This isn't a rhetorical question. I'm genuinely curious why people do this. I understand if they have the same question and want clarification of something already answered, but not for something like this.
It's fun to answer, that's why.

Another reason is that threads never die: The OP is not the only person interested in these answers. We are creating a treasure trove of information related to diving here. Reading these replies has given me much pleasure - and I don't look at the date stamps.

In my case I’d have prefixed my post with “I know you are not looking for this anymore but in case someone is interested by the same topic …”

I didn’t see the time stamp though and really wanted to share the fact that maritime archeology societies tend to need some non-diving work to run their ops.

I wanted to join the Nautical Archeology Society but cannot find the time to help … just wished I knew of this before I had a child :)

@PaulAllen some organisations like maritime archeology need non diving support (or ghost fishing) that could be something interesting as a hobby

By the way if your problem is asthma, you may be able to dive after a medical with a hyperbaric doctor: it depends if asthma is exercise induced
i have activity and allergy induced asthma. been certified since about 1990. only place that ever denied me diving was my very first warm water holiday. we went to jamaica. one of the dive guides saw my inhaler. he reported it to his boss. they would not let me dive after that. i think i did one dive.

Had a similar story, went to Thailand and email a dive op saying that I was asthmatic and asked if it was an issue.

When I went for some reason he refused to take my doctor’s letter, he sent me to a local doctor and then refused to take me saying that he didn’t trust Thai doctors … not sure why he was so reticent to take me: anyway my wife and I ended up snorkelling for these few days instead 😂

I didn’t even try to see hyperbaric doctor after that: I assumed that I’d not be able to scuba. Only thought about asking if there were doctor specialists for scuba years later when I had 3 months free between two jobs …

Probably showed up in the "Similar threads" listing down below. All to easy to click into another thread and not realize how old that thread is when replying.

Any spare sherpas out there, I might start building a divers sedan chair

How would I know the answer to that historical question, I wasn't born

You could sponsor me and send me on a dive trip every year. In return, I would love you forever and send you pictures.

In all seriousness though, why not pursue some other activity that YOU can participate in? Diving is pretty great, but lots of other things are pretty great too!

I see you are from Tampa. There are several coral restoration projects in Florida, such as those run by Coral Restoration Foundation that might needs help. Marine archaeolgy/maritime museums etc projects can always use volunteers to curate data retrieved by divers, docents, etc. Sorry no specifics come to mind right now.

You might look at the Tampa Aquarium to see if they use volunteer dive tenders to support thier dive operations. you would be directly involved with scuba and not be going underwater, but would provide support topside.
