I've seen some photos on the blackwater fb group, but no one there responded when I asked. I imagine this is something you should do only with an experienced op (at least, if you are AOW, I guess maybe some very experienced people could figure it out themselves). So where did those photos come from, does anyone here know?

Thanks!

Very good question, and I'd like to know the answer to that myself.

I know Japanese dive operations occasionally organise similar types of dives on Ishigaki (notably with photographer Kazushige Horiguchi) and also Kume (with Ryo Shinemizu, who actually trademarked the term Black Water Dive in Japan ), as well as some "light-trap dives" but not sure if someone somewhere is organising this on Okinawa main island.

Otherwise I'm looking to organise some bonfire dives on the island in the future, if I can find a good place to do it, which isn't easy.

* blackwater diving is typically done as a drift night dive over deep water to shoot larval / planktonic critters migrating to the surface, whereas bonfire dives are stationary dives done in the shallows, usually on a sandy bottom - both use light as lures, and focus on larval, planktonic critters
