Is there anything about the Mares Quad Air that would actually impede my enjoyment of recreational no-deco diving, as a complete beginner? Forget the bells and whistles of color displays, built-in compasses, GPS, wirelessly downloading depth data at 2 second granularity to my toaster via satellite, etc. etc. Is there anything, given 2024 knowledge, that would make my actual dive worse?

I am thinking about spending $400 on a computer/transmitter package (maybe less if something comes up used good condition). I like the idea of air integration, as I think I will look at my wrist a lot more often than a console at the end of a hose. But I don't really want to shell out $1,000 for a Shearwater Peregrine TX, when I don't really know what I want in a dive computer.

(I dislike the the "buy once cry once" philosophy, which I think just encourages people to buy stuff they don't need, and potentially get the wrong thing, resulting in "buy once, cry once, then kind of snivel repeatedly". Instead I go for a "buy twice smile twice" philosophy. Spend less money initially. Then after a while you either stick with what you have because it is sufficient, or spend the big bucks knowing exactly what you will and won't get benefit from. But I digress...)

So Mares Quad Air. Any reason not to buy?

I had a Mares Quad (without AI) and found it perfectly functional for a recreational diver. Nothing fancy but everything you need, easier than most (inexpensive alternatives) to navigate given the extra buttons.

Same. Solid starter computer.

Hi @happyharris

$400 for the computer and transmitter is an excellent price. The list price for the computer is more than that. It does run a relatively conservative RGBM decompression algorithm, should not be a problem for a new diver.

i own a mares quad air. i ve done 40 dives with it during my last season. I really like it for the price.

Sounds like a good deal. It will have everything you need as your dive skills continue to increase for some time.
