Is the FFM mentioned above safe? What are the options as far as radio comms?

Yes the M-48 is a very safe high quality versatile FFM. OTS and Dive-Link both offer communications for the M-48.

It may be an excellent, safe, versatile FFM which will even do your laundry for you on non-dive days. But it's not DIR.

I can see why - wearing a FFM interferes with your ability to do simple gas switches, and definitely makes doing OOA drills a much larger chore.

Are questions you might want to ask first.

If you don't want to be DIR then the DIR tenents are not relevant.

If you do want to be DIR then ask yourself, "Why?"
If your reasons are good, then go to GUE and get your training. They will teach you what is DIR and how to use it in a very good system.

Remember, that DIR is a good system, but it is only one way, out of many, to dive safely.

I would guess you have a particular reason for using a FFM, coms being one of them, Jeff in the case of the KM48 gas switches are slightly different to a standard mask and OC regs and again a matter of training, you can do it with your eyes closed one of the great features of the KM48 is the removable pod for gas switching and emergencies.

I dont really know what DIR really means, I just threw that out there. I am fairly new to this scuba board lingo thing....

The KM48 looks like a pretty damn safe FFM to me... Maybe a lot of bulk hanging off your chin tho? How much do the comms cost? How much does the KM48 cost?

Why do you need a FFM? Is there a legitimate use that you need it for?

Man, you don't have to answer to anyone but yourself... If you want to dive it for no other reason than gee-whiz factor go for it...(get the proper training just like any other piece of gear...)

Since the issue has come up FFM offers the user protection from the cold, allows the use of communications, allows the user to breathe through thier nose, and decreases jaw fatigue.

FFM also offers the diver protection when using high PPO2 (protection from drowning if convulsions...) I believe JJ is known to use one for 100% deco or has in the past if that makes any difference

Looks like a spin off thread has started...
