hi! i was wondering if any of u guys out there tried the sony p5 digi camera? cos i was thinking of getting it..pls advised!!thks

I've been thinking about buying the DSC-P5 as well along with the Sony MPK-P5 marine pack housing. The price recently dropped $100 on the camera. Most every place is now selling them for $499 and the marine pack for $249. I haven't heard much about it or any Sony camera for that matter. It seems more people are using Olympus cameras.

I did some research on this in March.

I wanted to go with the Sony.

I got a chance to try out the Canon S40, w/ housing, etc.

I looked at the reviews in Digital Photography Review

The Canon's a better camera, e.g., manual operation, higher resolution lens, etc. (See the Digital Photog Review detail tests).

BUT

can't find adequate color correction filters for the Canon (for natural light photography)

so...

Jury's out...

[and I'm going to stick with Nikon CP950 + Ikelite for now]

I own the P5 and the Marine pack, I'm still a newbie with it, but I think it's the best. I've done a far bit of research before I brought and there are advantages to the Cannon and the Olympus but the small size was the deciding factor for me. The Sony does give you enough control although not as much as the Cannon. The Sony has a closer minimium focusing distance than the Olympus and the same as the Cannon (4" vs. 8"), this was critical for me for macro work. Some other advantages no TTL flash which means any slave flash should work. Disadvantage, Sony memory sticks, they use to be more expensive but not as much anymore. Highly recommend the dpreview.com site for comparisions.

Having said all that I know several people that have gotten spectacular pictures with the P5 (go over to BonaireTalk.Com and search for Sony) and it's a quarter the size of the competetion. It fits very nicely under my BCD strap.

Cool, thanks for the info Cecil.:)

I ended up buying the Sony P5 camera tonight. I plan on ordering the MPK-5 Marine Pack housing for it next week. Anyone know where I can get the best deal on the Marine Pack?

I've just bought a P5 and it's Marine pack to replace the P1 I flodded in Mexico. I haven't yet try it, but from what I've seen it has some more features than the P1.
I was hoping to try it this weekend but the weather doesn't help ...

I'll let you know

Cheers

Sue
