I purchased a new-to-me YS-110 without fully understanding the YS-110 to alpha saga. As I understand it, the YS-110 was supposed to support TTL, it didn't and rather than recalling and fixing their problem, S&S released the YS-110 alpha. (FWIW, the S&S website still promises that the YS-110 supports TTL)

I do have an optical sync cable, so the flash is usable with the camera in manual mode, but excluding purchasing yet another flash, are there any modifications I can make to enable TTL?

TIA

I believe the ys110a has "better" optical TTL support. The original Ys110 does support optical TTL. I have been using mine for years in optical TTL mode with a dx1g camera. I actually have never used them in manual mode yet. Still have to learn how to do that. Maybe next dive trip....

They do misfire once in a while and give me a white out, but not often enough to be bothered with doing anything about it. About 1 in 400 shots.

As part of the strobe misfire "cure" saga, Sea & sea also released a modified optical cable mounting bracket for their dx1g housing that better positioned the cable ends over the internal flash. My local dealer never came through on the delivery of that.

So go ahead and try yours out before you beat yourself up too much.
