I dont expect a response or an action when I use (did it only once) the report button. I just want to point out a situation and I have confidence the MODs will do the best they can with their judgment. They did act very quickly when I did report a situation and I was impressed.

H2Andy:
actually, Mods do respond to the "reports" they receive from members

but it is not common practice to contact the reporting member

Mods do a great job in the back ... doesn't get communicated to the members

classic example of what i am trying to point out

you're not making it easy for me to defend the MODs.

the more I read, the more I keep thinking of a "Green Wall of Silence"

not at all ... they work very hard to make the board a better place

but because they don't communicate well with the rest of us, it is easy to perceive them as a "Green Wall of Silence"

which, i assure you, could not be further from the truth. i have worked with pretty much every member of the ScubaBoard staff, and they are committed to making ScubaBoard a better place

what bothers me is that they don't seem to understand that how they are perceived by the members is key to making ScubaBoard a better place

First of all, though it puts the staff and management of ScubaBoard at a distinct disadvantage, we will never reveal WHY a person was banned to anyone else but the person in question. It's a matter of trust and privacy. However, you will notice an "NA" under each and every banned person's name. That means "Not Available". We could put "Stinking idiot who went and got his stupid butt banned", but then we would have to ban ourselves. :D

Second, when a thread is closed, there should be an explanation left as to why and whether it is temporary or permanent. If not, PM your favorite mod or just hit the "Report Bad Post" which will go to ALL moderators, both on and off the forum. Then you don't have to play tag with multiple mods and someone is bound to be on. BTW, I must admit that I have have accidentally on pupose left some temp closed threads just remain closed. Call it a character deficit.

Third, when a thread is closed and pulled the OP is supposed to get a PM. After all, it's their thread. If it is pulled for cleaning, then often we don't send a message, but put an explanation in the body of the thread. Sometimes we add our comment to the OP and make it obvious what we are doing. After this discussion, we will revisit our policy. Of course persuant to Title XIII Paragraph 6 of the ScubaBoard Penal Code, we have to do the exact opposite of whatever Andy suggests.

Fourth, I can't tell you how many times I tried to delete a "few posts" from a thread and completely obliterated it. Take the Democratic thread. I dutifully copied it over to our claimed area. Then I started to delete all the posts but the last one (mine). Ooopsie. Now the original thread is gone (with all the subscriptions to it). You can probably hear a bit of my frustration coming through in that post.

Finally. As valuable as this is as a resource for knowledge, dive buddies and great deals, it is "just" a forum. You, the user, are the most important resource we possess, and I hope we never lose sight of that.Your families, your work and even your diving all take precedent over ScubaBoard and that is how it should be. Clearly some are rather obsessive about our community, and while we are flattered, we feel compelled to remind you not to neglect the other areas of your life.

Postlogue... Someone suggested that there were 200 or so people on ScubaBoard at any one time. Now, I must admit that this was fightin' words for me. As I started to type this there were 658 people on. Yes, this is a peak time for us, but we usually have 250 or more at three in the morning. I love this world wide aspect of our humble board.

Missdirected:
.....I get on average at least one pm a week from total strangers,
do the pretty ones every realize they are being chatted up??? :D

ive had a few pms this year asking questions.... but, could be that they also had so many questions in the one pm so they dont know which thread to start

photohikedive:
can we expect a response when using the report button?
I have used it a few times, and never heard back.
although, I have, been on the recieving end more than once. so I know that (according to the warnings I recieved) the mods do respond to some.

ive used the report button when some nazi white supremist started posting.... lightening fast action and i was surprised to get a "thanks for reporting" email

again i ask... who would choose to be a mod? its alot of hard work

maybe its a punishment actually handed out to the naughty kids so they get to see that they arent so cool and more a pita instead

i look forward to seeing Mod Jeff onboard soon!

Are you under the impression that most readers and members of this Board actually spend part of the day thinking about how the Board works, who does what, and what moderating conventions are used to keep things afloat? I think this deep reflection is not held by most folks who simply enjoy visiting, reading, and posting.

(why do I foresee a new poll in the near future?)

So instead of reading almost 34 pages, can someone summarise in a "Yes" or "No" answer? :D

enough do to create these sorts of threads, which appear with sufficient regularity to tell me it's a widespread issue

of course, you could pretend that this type of thread doesn't happen often enough to indicate a problem, and when members try to point to the problem, you could pretend that it's in their heads and it doesn't exist

i think Pete just made his call, and that's the end of that

and everybody knows that what you believe *is* reality
