I would! I just finished reading Submerged by Daniel Lenihan. He founded SCRU, the National Park Service's Submerged Cultural Resources Unit. A fascinating read.

Are we talking "distance learning" ??

The best course is the one sponsered by the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) in the UK.

This is because it is reconised around the world and has a puplished sylibus and training package. In the US, most local courses don't have any legs, in that if you go anywhere else, they have no idea what you have/have not been taught because nothing is published.

However, in the US the NAS can be hard to come by as there are not that many instructors. An alternative is the Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society (MAHS) in Maryland. Their program is based on the NAS sylibus and they have a 10 tape program that can be bought for about $100 that is very good. If you can get enough people together they will work with you to set up a program at cost where they fly in the instructors on 2 weekends. I put together just this about 3 years ago in CT and it went over well.

In the Northwest, there is another group that can help out

I do not recomend most PADI/NAUI courses are not worth the time. The training packages are just not up to snuff.
