I have been told that if I buy something from a dealer on the internet, it could nulify the warranty of thet item. Is this true? I am looking to purchase a dive computer ( the Oceanic Pro Plus 2 ) and have found that I could save money by buying it on-line.

I would love to buy it locally if the price was close but in this case, the price difference is significant. I'm a little gunshy if the warranty is in jeopardy.

Any opinions or experiences?

Thank's
John

As long as it is from an authorized Oceanic online retailer then your factory warranty will be intact.

Oceanic's site has a listing for authorized internet retailers. I bought my Oceanic from an online retailer and got a great price and my factory warranty is intact.

What you have been told is basically wrong. There are many fully authorized internet dealers selling the product you mention. While there might be SOME operations that operate without the blessing of the factory, they would be rare.

What you might run head-on into is the restriction on price advertising imposed by the factories. In those cases, you simply should phone an authorized internet dealer and tell them the price you would like to pay. You never know, they might agree.

All that said....authorized internet scuba dealers provide you with the full warranty offered by the manufacturer, along with complete customer service and care.

Oh, welcome to ScubaBoard.

Some online sources are authorized dealers and some are not. Some of the unauthorized dealers match the mfgr warranty so it may not be an issue. a new computer is one piece of scuba gear that I believe it is important to purchase with a reasonable warranty. If you identify the specific retailer, your question would be more easily answered.

Well what they told the OP isn't exactly "wrong." It could nullify the warranty if he buys it from the wrong place... Check the Oceanic's website per ChuckWagon's suggestion...also you could just edit your orginal post and tell us where you are planning to buy it from. As far as I know LeisurePro will void the Oceanic Warranty (although they match it with their own) but ScubaToys won't. Those are the two biggest online dealers that I know of, if it isn't one of those two and you post the name...you could get the added benefit of people posting their experiences with the company.

Another option-some shops will do this, some shops won't and it never hurts to ask. Ask your shop if they will match the price. If you get a simple "no" that's fine, you tried. If you get a "yes" even better. If you get an attitude...that's equally as important because that lets you know it's time to find a new LDS. It was my online purchase of an Oceanic Pro Plus 2 (among other reasons) that caused me to ditch my first LDS and find the one I use now.

For what it's worth, I got my PP2 from Leisure Pro and it broke on my first ocean dive. I then had to dive without my brand new computer/birthday present all week on my dive trip. When I got back home they were closed for the better part of a month for a bunch of Jewish holidays (September/October). I paid to ship it back, and a few weeks later they sent me a new PP2. I mean they sort of righted-it by sending me a new one...but I think it's pretty crappy that it broke on the first ocean dive after only having it for one month...and they couldn't even tell me what happened to it. I think it has more to do with LP and rumors I've heard that they sell stuff that has been sitting on the shelves for years and less to do with the PP2. It has great reviews and I've talked to ther people that dive it without incident.

No flames people! This isn't a bash on LP, they have good customer service (when they are open). The whole brand new broken computer thing just left a bad taste in my mouth.

It's easy to see if the dealer is authorized or not... just go to the Oceanic website and look for dealers... Or call oceanic. But as stated above, a lot of us on line guys are legit... but some aren't. Just check it out in advance, and feel free to call.

.

When your new LDS goes out of business as a result of being undercut by internet sales, I hope you can find another LDS.

Who told you "I have been told that if I buy something from a dealer on the internet"???..........

Warranty, no warranty, price... you need to weigh your options. Depending on how much cheaper it is it might still be worth buying even if it doesn't come with a warranty. I run into this scenario often buying things online. Most of the time if you buy something new it's not going to break. So if you take the chance in buying something new online without a warranty you are running a risk but it's not huge. I have a PP2 that is past the 2 year warranty and it broke. I just had to send it away to get replaced and it's a flat rate of $150. So depending on how much you're saving buying it online it might still be a better deal to buy it without a warranty and just pay to have it fixed IF it does break. If you're saving $300 or so on it and it happens to break and you have to pay the $150 to fix it you're still ahead $150. To each his own, it's just another way to look at it. Like I said, you have to weigh your options. By the way I love my PP2!
