I found this link on the rec.scuba newsgroup. It actually has some good bits every now and then.

Larry Taylor's dive training

It was from a Ph.D. who uses a "playful" teaching method to teach diving. It should probably go in the instructor to instructor forum but I can't get in there.

It's still an interesting read for non-instructors though.
 
My class used the hula-hoops in pool training when I was OW certed. Same with finding things etc. I feel (although not an instructor) it was a great tool to teach me bouyancy (kind of with the hoops) and task loading.

Good post.
These sorts of toys/props are a great addition to scuba training, when used at the end of sessions or between skills. Anything that helps people become more comfortable in the water and enjoy diving is all good.
