Unfortunately, I've found that some insurance carriers only cover your gear up to a certain amount or only in the continental US; if you travel with your gear (as most of us do) then there is no coverage.

A separate personal articles policy will cover most any circumstance other than normal wear and tear. Homeowner's policy coverage, however, usually has restrictions. My husband is a professional violinist who travels extensively and he's used a personal articles policy for years to cover his instruments. It may not be the best choice for everyone, of course, but if you travel it's one option to consider.

Thanks for all of the helpful information folks! I actually called my homeowner's insurance company and scuba gear is covered under personal property. I have an extra rider for electronics/computers. But it's nice to know that insurance will cover in the event that someone steals scuba gear while traveling or even at your house.

Like many of you have mentioned, the insurance company recommended either video taping or photographing the entire contents of my house (scuba gear included)... like opening closets, etc. Reason being is that all that "stuff" can be covered in the event of a total loss (fire, flood, tidal wave, volcano, etc.) I was really pleasantly surprised to hear that they would cover property loss world wide, travelling, at home... They weren't incredibly nit-picky about serial numbers, etc. but I'm savin' my gear receipts just in case.

I'm curious if DAN insurance does anything above and beyond what my homeowner's policy would do.....
