My DAN insurance is about to expire. And given some of the recent news and sketchy issues with DAN, I'm considering going with an alternate provider. That being said, does anyone have some input, be it personal experience, news, anything.

I know most of the major insurance providers apply to recreational divers, but do they still provide the same support to mixed gas, overhead, and deep divers?

I got mine thru Naui which covers tech diving. It seemed as good as DANS and I di it for the same reasons you list...

Remember that any dive insurance is only a secondary insurance. They will only start after your primary insurance stops. The first thing to do is check on what you primary health insurance covers and then decide.

You should also check any life insurance to see if it covers you when diving. Some will not pay out if you go beyond 130' or into deco.

There were some issues yes, but they have been resolved:

Ditto this. I carry an indemity plan (i.e. it covers me no matter where my butt might splat). As such, I have no need to extra coverage. That said DAN's assist coverage that you get with just being a member is nice as that gets you to medical help. You are responsible after that.

Yeah watch the life insurance - although in my experience they typically nap you before issuing the policy rather after it is force.

Not entirely true... DiveAssure is primary coverage.

Speaking of life insurance, anyone know if there are any companies out there that specifically will cover divers, or better yet, divers who exceed the recreational limits?

I'm looking at DiveAssure when my current policy from PADI runs out, specifically because they offer more coverage and are primary, not secondary. DANs is good, as many testimonials bear out, but it is very narrowly focussed.

I am surprised that you took DAN's word for it. :no

Try looking at an independent evaluation of DAN. Of note is the fact that they are still paying Bennett $192K a year. Not bad for a crook.

PS I got NAUI insurance because of the funny stuff STILL going on at DAN.
I don't care about who gets what in DAN. Insurance business is BTW not the cleanest of industries...;)

If they do a public press release together with the party they had issues with (SSS), AND on the SSS website DAN USA is back on the list of insurance providers accepted by SSS.............I think it is fair to say that SSS will accept DAN insurance? That's what I paid for and that's what I expect.... regardless of a former CEO getting a retainer.

But another question, maybe a slight hijack here... I saw on Quest that DAN may not cover divers when diving hypoxic mixes and below 50m..... they are looking into this, but there seems to be something there. Anyone has any idea?
