I know here in New Zealand if you work Full Time as an Instructor you generally get paid anywhere between $25K and $32K a year. I am lucky in that my dive shop really wanted me so they pay me $35K a year, for about a 60-70 hour week. This is NZ dollars so if you work in USD, halve that to get a comparison.
I dropped $25K a year to work in the dive industry and now find I cannot sustain that so I am going back to get a real job at the end of January.

As a part time instructor the rates in this part of the world differ between shops. My old shop used to pay $75 per student for OW courses and my current shop pays $60 a day.

In Aussie on the GBR the general consensus from those that work there agree it is around $100 AUD per day, for a 6-7 day week and about 14 hours a day. After Tax you should get around $75 AUD per day take home.

I suspect you're not the target audience.

There are companies that charge $50/visit to pick up dog poop. If you have a million dollar home, $50 for someone to pick up the poop is a bargain.

If you make $500,000/year doing whatever, it's a bargain for you and your family to get certified before a vacation for a couple of thousand dollars, if it's done on your schedule, and with the personal attention you want.

$600 for an OW card? Wow! That's a lot. I only paid $220 for mine. Where are you? With the competition around here, it wouldn't be possible for me.

Maybe it costs more in Canada because they also have to train you to find water in a non-solid form as well????

So where in the world would pay the most as an instructor?

robbcayman:
Yeah, $850 in Canadian money right????????????

I figured that to and did the conversion. It is still insane. $600 Canadian is $515 USD. I paid $250 for everything in Hawaii. Don't know about mainland prices but haven't heard many ever state prices that high in the U.S.

Is that normal range for Canada.

It sure isn't Kona, at least in the Kailua area, I'm not sure what teh resort guys up north make. The $$ mentioned by the original poster and the New Zealand poster would WOW instructors here.

Guess they love that icy water......

Canada is looking better than Mexico now.
