DM Paolo never received a single centavo from me...he didn't charged Dm fees for all the dives we did together. He's a friend.

In Aquav, I tip the boatmen (P400-P500) and staff (P500). Also, like in the previous x'mas celebrations I give em gifts like t-shirts, money, food stuff etc..

in aquav & portulano tips for the boatmen & staff as well. several times at portulano we gave shirts, caps, cigarettes, rum and canned goodies as well.

Babydamulag:
How do you guys feel about tipping the DM? {seriously)

Hmm.

I dive mostly in PG. There I have a long-standing arrangement where I leave P1,000 behind the bar for the DMs/instructors, the same amount again at the dive shop tip box for staff & bankeros & the same again at the hotel desk for staff there.

Maybe not excessive, but at HK$500, it's not peanuts either in my book. Cash gratuities are always a bit awkward, especially between me & DMs I've known for years & are generally Westerners like me.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I do prefer the idea of the guys & gals getting
a few drinks off me when I'm already gone.

same here, jag. i only tip great service. if it sucks or just okay, i dont give anything.
shugar:
which is why he's asking for money hahahahaha

Jag

PS
i'm such a lousy tipper... but i like to tip great service...

So, the idea that good service gets a tip is a valid premise to determine the "level" of service a DM/staff provides. Typically, we leave a $100 US bill for the staff and each DM a 1000 pesos for each dive guide worth their salt. From time to time we also host a lechon Bar-B-QUE for the entire staff. I am amazed at how far a little kindness goes in the world. We need to let our fellow divers know that it is a "good" thing to tip and provide the staff extras. So, next time while in duty free.....pick up the staff something and show up with a gift. The kindness you show goes a loooooong way at home in the Philippines.
