What's the going rate of a Scuba Instructors commission on dive classes? Assuming that all he does is teach, and that the dive shop/owner supplies everything else, training materials, venue, equipment, boat, etc.... any thoughts on this???

The industry trend in the US is for a 50-50 split. We feel that 50-50 is a good number. We need to create an environement that changes the mentality in the Philippines to fall in line with a 50-50 split. As an owner, we understand the risk associated with both instructor and resort. I understand that DIVEGUIDES in PG are getting 500 pesos per dive group. The size of the group does not affect the price of 500 pesos. The best days for DIVEGUIDES are 2000 pesos. Now, this forces the DIVEGUIDE to catcha as many dives as possible. For instructors, we need to tailor the day to fit the number of students, boats, tanks, etc. We are going to see a trend change in the PI. We'll see larger groups of dive club (EURO and Asian) tourists moving together and attempting to dive the max amount per day. The trend has already been set into motion at many places that cater to Chinese tourists. We need to look at the value-added of our INSTRUCTORS and DIVEGUIDES. The INSTRUCTOR/DIVEGUIDE must be bi-lingual, rated in many specialties, hotel/resort business savy, and always be available for work. This type of employee COSTS!!! Our industry needs to change.

500p per group up to 2000p per day is really peanuts when dive ops charge US$20 or more per person per dive! Where is our money going?

Is it customary for us to tip DMs/dive guides in Philippines? Wondered if I should have my awesome Canadian dive guide a tip as well as a beer.

AFIK the places that usually charge $20 will get you on a boat regardless of # of other divers... so most of the $20 would go to gas [$20 = P1,000]

NOW... get 5 divers in a boat at $20 each, your gas bill doesn't go up... might give the guide a little extra (another $10? perhaps?) but i guess dive operators have to eat too right?

overall though, anilao diving has made me a cheapskate...

AFAIK most guides here are paid per person rates for guiding. I think i would have a strike if I tried to pay instructors $40 a day!

See MV's comments re tipping :D

isnt the standard DM commission in PG US$4/diver?

and oh yeah, i agree with Mike. definitely tip him if hes awesome, tram. especially f its just you and him on a dive trip. a beer afterwards wont hurt too. :)
