Right now I'm thinking maybe just do all the pool stuff tomorrow and two open water dives then do the other two some other time. Does that seem reasonable? I'm hoping they'll give me some money back if i do that. Thanks for all the replies, it is immensely appreciated!!!

I would ask for a complete refund and go with another shop. Seriously.

this is a complete violation of any agency training standards that I know of. On top of that it is unsafe.
there is a lot to learn and it takes time.

The fact that they would even suggest this raises all kinds of flags. Aside from the ethical questions of what they're doing, it's simply not possible for you to adequately absorb that amount of information and experience in so little time. I understand you not wanting to waste an opportunity, but it's wasted if you just rapidly go through the motions while learning a lot less than if you'd done it in a more reasonable timeframe. I'm glad to hear you're open to better options.

It's just one weekend, so how you spend it won't make a huge difference in the big picture either way. Might as well be smart about it.

I called back and the receptionist said the instructor told her a different story and she said that more than three dives in a day is not permitted, anyway. I told her i just wanted to do two dives and she said they would only charge me for two. So it's somewhat reassuring to hear her say that but not sure about the instructor.

The front office screwed up my scuba reservation and forgot to book someone to do the pool gives so now they want to rush me through all the pool and open water certification dives in one day (i was only in town long enough for two days of diving). I'm totally fine with that as long as it's safe. Just wondering if i should be concerned about doing 4 dives in one day as a beginner? Thanks in advance for any input.

It's not only unsafe, in my opinion, but assuming it's a PADI instructor, standards will not allow it. you aren't allowed to make more than 3 training dives in 1 day.

That is just crazy - my pool dives took a whole weekend: 6-7 hours each day! Shame on this dive shop for suggesting it as I'm sure it violates agency rules as others have said.

No offense intended, but why would you even consider rushing through this just because it might be inconvenient to do it the right way? The fact that you are even asking if this is OK shows why you really should not rush through this!

Find a new shop and do it correctly.

The shop can give you a "referral" that's a piece of paper saying what you have done up to that point in time. Get one so you can finish your training somewhere else and then look for a shop that is willing to train you responsibly. It may end up costing you more in the end but what price do you want to put on your life?

I would be very reluctant to train with people who do these kinds of things..... I've seen weekend courses being taught and as instructor you need to focus your attention on 2 primary safety skills and drilling into the student to dive with a guide. You will not learn how to dive well enough in a day or 2, in my opinion, to be a competent OW diver. All this does is make you the next instructor's "problem" when they have you for AOW and have to teach you fundamental skills that you didn't learn during your initial training.
