Hi guys and girls

Would like to know by those already qualified Instructors. What water skills they had to perform in order to receive thier Instructor certification. Please state if you NAUI or PADI.

If I recall correctly, the S&P for the respective organizations should detail what is expected from the candidates in order to earn an Instructor certification.

However, what difference does it make? You should be prepared to demonstrate them all. If you expect to earn an Instructor certification and then plan to actually teach you're going to have to demonstrate all of those skills (perfectly I might add) to your students. So before you show up for the course, you'd best be able to perform them all flawlessly. Otherwise, IMO, you have no business being an instructor.

(BTW, I'm a NAUI instructor. I haven't taught in several years though, so my recollections of the S&P may be rusty.)

~10 of the 20 OW skills in confined water
~4 OW skills in open water
4 skills from AOW(from any of the ~15 specialties - 1st dive only)/Rescue/DM

ColWaters, my memory is fading regarding my PADI IE....
but in the pool, I was required to teach the CESA and the hover - I started watching the lap swimmers swimming adjacent to us (behind the "students') and forgot about my breathing and almost broke the surface!
In the open water, I was required to teach mask clearance and fin pivot using LP inflation hose.
The examiner made us (only three candidates) do all 20 skills in the pool as a group.

Hi I am a PADI Instructor and during my IE we were only required to perform 5 of the 20 basic skills in the exam plus teach 2 in confined water from any PADI Course (mine were from Rescue and Confined Dive 3 in the OW Course) and in the Open Water evaluation teach 2 skills from any course, mine were from the Search & Recovery Specialty and from the Rescue Course.

However the DM course requires you to perform all 20 skills perfectly.

Here is a quote from the performance requirement to score a perfect skill:

"Exercise performed correctly, slowly and with exaggerated movement – appeared easy."

These are the 20 basic Skills

1. Equipment assembly, adjustment, preparation, donning and disassembly
2. Predive safety check (BWRAF)
3. Deep water entry
4. Buoyancy check at surface
5. Snorkel-regulator/regulator snorkel exchange
6. Five point descent
7. Regulator recovery and clearing
8. Mask removal, replacement and clearing
9. Air depletion exercise and alternate air source use stationary
10. Freeflow regulator breathing
11. Fin pivot (neutral buoyancy)
12. Five point ascent
13. Remove and replace weight system on the surface
14. Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA)
15. Hovering motionless for 30 seconds
16. Underwater swim without a mask
17. Remove and replace weight system underwater
18. Remove and replace scuba unit underwater
19. Remove and replace scuba unit on the surface
20. Buddy breathing stationary and swimming (donor and receiver)

I hope this helps you. BTW are you looking for this information with the intention of going PRO?

To be specific, my format was:

5 CW skills demoed to the IE examiner
2 CW skills demoed to "the class" - 1 OW, 1 Rescue
4 OW skills demoed to "the class" - 2 OW, 2 Adv
OW Rescue Scenario 7

Thanks alot for the info. Very much appreciated.

Eventually I would like to do my NAUI Instructors. So I just wanted an idea of what basically to expect from the Instructor Course. I would really just love to teach this amazing sport to everyone I come across. Not sure if you know what I'm trying to say.

Thanks again.

Oh.. everyone is talking about the PADI IE.

For the actualy course you need to demonstrate every single OW skill in "demonstration quality". I've been told PADI will present changes to the IDC at DEMA. I would expect They will include the Rescue skills and a few AOW as part of the revised IDC.

That seems to be the trend in the IE since the middle of this year.

Frasermcd,

Just out of curosity, could youy elaborate on Buddy Breathing?

Only asking because during my PADI OW, i was told that due to having the Octo, Buddy breathing is no longer taught during PADI OW classes? Of course i understand that although it is not longer taught to new divers, i can appreciate that it may still be a requirement during the IE.
