Hello,
I'm tring to decide between these two Mares regulators. I am a new diver, and will dive primarily in South Florida and the Caribbean.
Thank you for your help.

I use the MR12 first with a Proton octo as deco bottle regs. They are great work horse regs. They great little regs for the type of diving you are describing.

Thank you for the reply. I know both regs are good pieces of equipment, but I was wondering if the Proton was worth spending an extra $100.00 for. I will be buying 2 sets of new equipment- one for me and one for my son. This can become an expensive sport, but I've been looking forward to diving for quite some time.
Take care.

I have the Rebel Octopus and big problems with it and Mares Thailand was absolut not helpfull, so I can't recommend that regulator.
While I have a Abyss which works fine!

I have the Proton V16 regulator and octopus. They are superb and breath great even at depth.

The Rebel MR12 and Proton MR12 are both compact also and I really think Mares products are great and are reasonably priced.

I recently tried an Aqualung Legend and a ScubaPro model. They are both enormous compared to the Mares and I found them unwieldy and clunky compared to my Mares.

There really aren't that many differences between the two regs, and they are both excellent values for the money. I prefer the looks of the Proton, but that is merely a personal issue.

As far as regular servicing goes, they are equally simple to tune. The Proton is my favorite Mares reg to service, as the side port makes fine adjustment a snap. I would love to see Mares build a larger version of the Proton, along with an exhaust tee that is the same size as the discontinued Akros/Epos series. Now, that would be an awesome regulator for technical diving.
