not really sure if this is were i should post this, buuut..... iv been fiddling around with cheap point and shoot and as well as disposable cameras, and i think its time i buy my self a decent SLR camera. unfortunately cost is a problem as well as inexperience.

What is a good cheap SLR camera for a beginner, that i can buy a underwater housing for. for underwater use.

my budget is more or less 160 for the camera and another for a housing so 320 in total.

EDIT:
after doing a little bit of price checking i realize that the price range is out of the question

i just want some advice on a good quality starter camera and housing for the budget i have point and shoot or SLR

$320 for an SLR and housing?

For that price, you might be able to pick up a smashed camera and a housing that leaks.

On second thought, you might be able to purchase a used film camera/housing for that price. Does anyone even develop film anymore?

Hey, y'all be nice, we were all noobs once!!!

Ermaclob, you're talking 4-digits to go SLR underwater, and they're pretty significant digits, at that! :)

If you want an SLR for above water, I would suggest used, and ebay and fredmiranda.com are good sources. Just be real careful on ebay.

Adorama and B&H have great deals, also.

As for a point and shoot for underwater for cheap, you might want to haunt the classifieds for someone selling their old setup.

For beginner with limited diving experience, the P&S or prosumer camera is easier to handle UW rather than bulky and expensive (D)SLR.
If you open to other brand, you can look used obsolete model prosumer camera w/ OEM housing, such as Oly SP-350, S-90, G7, G9 was popular among UWP's due its manual and RAW features capable.

well after being made fun off due to my ridiculously ignorant question. (which i can see now was very silly) iv looked around and was wondering if if getting an Olympus 3000 with an Ikelite housing would be a good first step. considering my budget.

i like new especially electronics!!!!, i cant see my self ever buying a used peace of electronics hardware and using with out the intent to brake it.

You'd be looking at $1000+ for a good 'prosumer' camera and housing, with strobe.

Your budget points in the direction of Point-and-Shoot, with OM housing. That said, you can take some darn good pics with a well chosen pos camera (see my gallery here - most are taken with an old Sony Cybershot T20 that I found underwater. The camera had laid at 40m for over 5 months. I cleaned up the housing at hey presto!).

Check Ebay... that's were the real bargains can be found.

..well after being made fun .of ..

I'm sorry.

I just spend almost $10,000 for my dSLR camera, housing, strobes, and multiple lenses & ports. And then you asked about a dSLR for $320. I didn't mean to make fun of you.

The "cheapest" SLR housing you'll probably find is the Sea & sea RDX series, retail around 1,399 without the port. I spent around $5,000 on my "beginner" SLR unlike poor Harry here for 10,000.
