I've been searching for a DM courses in Indonesia, preferably near Jakarta, and am getting frustrated with the idea that all of the tested course material is to be obtained by reading the manual only and no real explanation by a teacher. Has anyone gotten their DM cert in this area of the world and had a real mentor who was able to explain the material from the manual (yes, I'm particularly talking about that physics and chemistry stuff) to a non-maths oriented person? Thanks for any input you have.

I don't know for sure, but a lot of DM courses are run self-study. The places I know do not expect the candidate to learn everything from a book - instructors and support staff are on hand to answer questions, provide more in depth lectures/information on various topics and also may have sessions on various topics throughout the duration of your training - just not necessarily in a rigid structure. A good DM course should provide a very strong and knowledgable net of people to help you through - but I would also expect a candidate to take responsibility for the material, too. This is not so much of a spoon fed course as say the Open Water course.

Ask some more questions of the dive centres you have looked at - I suspect that they do offer support to their candidates, you just need to ask before you sign up. Detailed answers may be in the pre course briefing.
