I got a complete rig w/ STA, weight pockets, and a SS backplate for $500. I got a Dive Rite w/ the Transplate Harness, Venture singles wing. I've since moved to a hog harness (highly recommended). Just do your research and you will find something in your price range. Not knocking the big "H" but you won't find anything on that rig that you won't find on the others, except for maybe a chronically stuck inflator :). Definitely not worth the extra cheddar.

Check out the Gear Exchange board here on ScubaBoard - there's always good deals available!

Talk to Tobin of Deep Sea Supply (see their forum and website). Super helpful and knowledgeable guy. He will steer you in the right direction. If you look on their website you will see a rig configurator. His package deals are great buys. I looked at my LDS and at several other options, but this was the best deal. Specifically, the personal attention is what sold me. If you do a quick search you will see that many divers speak highly of his gear.

I've lost a bunch of weight and my jacket BC is way too big so I'm in the market for a BC
I'm not opposed to a BP/W setup. what should I expect to pay? everywhere I go you have to buy all the pieces separate and I don't know what all I need.
I've searched the forum and there's tons of info but maybe someone can answer these questions:

1. what should I expect to pay for a BP/W setup?
2. is there somewhere that sells the complete package? so I don't have to go here and there piecing it together?

For a steel plate and heavy STA Hammerhead has the best price I've seen. They sell harness kits too and you can order a wing of you choice from another site. You my also want order some bungee (for a bungee necklace) and boltsnaps (for clipping things on/off) if you don't have those already. I assume you already have cam straps. That would be about $160 for the plate/STA/harness and then about $260 for a the wing (say oxycheq mach v from scubatoys with 10% SB discount) for a total of $420 + shipping + some additional costs from boltsnaps and such.

Now if you just go with aluminium plate and no STA it's about $100 from hammerhead. Then add a Oxycheq 30# Standard (Razor) wing for about $230 from scubatoys, for example, for a total of $330 + shipping. (Note: Not sure if the Oxycheq wing cam strap slots line up with Hammerhead cam strap slots, but they probably do). Of course, I prefer to use an STA anyway (1-piece, low profile).

Later you may want to add some weight pockets. Diversports currently has some good deals on those. Get 2-4 XS Scuba Single Weight Pockets for $8 each with free shipping. Thrown in a XS Scuba "V" Weight Pouch for $11 while you are at it: Dive Sports Online Chat Board Specials - DecoStop and ScubaBoard Specials

My general advice though would be to make sure you get exactly what you want because that $100-200 extra won't seem like that much money after you put a 100 dives on your new rig. Also, read some of the horseshoe vs. donut threads to decide whether it matters to you (I prefer donuts). ~30# wing is enough for most people (~18# is okay for tropics). Very few people would need more than 30# of lift for single tank rec diving. Or as others have suggested, take a look at the used gear ads - sometimes you find great deals there.
