Look, I have to keep things standardized as regular rec configuration for Advanced. If I change stuff afterwards, that's on me, but for now, "golden triangle," etc.

For now, sounds like the snorkel keeper is something to try.

no agency outside of BSAC requires that. If your instructor requires it for whatever asinine reason, just rig something that works well enough for the class, and then switch over when you're done. No sense in trying to perfect a fatally flawed system

There is no reason not to use a necklace. It holds the reg in place where you can get to it quickly, even without using your hands. It keeps the reg from dragging on the bottom. It allows you to know immediately if your reg is leaking or free flowing. It gives you piece of mind because you never have to search for it the way you do with other backup reg holders that fail often.

I just want something cheap that works for the time being.

Before I used a necklace I used a snorkel keeper like this for $1. If you just want to attach it to a d ring you can thread one end through the other so it's "tied" around whatever you want and it still leaves the other end free for the octo. If you make sure you put the mouth piece all the way through so the snorkel keeper is kind of stuck behind the cut off tip of the zip tie it will never come loose unless someone pulls.

snorkel keeper-prusik it around a d-ring, and slip the other end over a mouthpiece. Just pop it out. Easy to remove, but high risk to have the keeper fall off when deployed.
o-ring on a bolt snap-if you have time to deploy, then deploy, if not, then pull off the o-ring
video below shows another solution. Similar to the attachments above, ideal solution is to unclip the bolt snap and deploy, but you can pop it off and the loop will slide down the hose. You can then unclip it prior to restowing. This is what is on all of my regulators

Is that an instructor or shop requirement? I distinctly remember doing my AOW with a long hose and bungeed secondary.

O-ring plus boltsnap, like someone said up thread. If you pull hard enough the o-ring will break, but under normal use you use the boltsnap.

"Golden Triangle"

Between you head, and hips ... hmmmm bungee'd 2nd fits that description, and donate the long hose. PADI's hip to it, maybe not the instructor however....
