Sorry that came across as a flame, that was not my intent.

Our wives could be sisters physically, exactly the same height and weight.

Best to you on the rest of your trip.

I agree on the red wine, but I am not an ice cream guy so much anymore.

It's so unfortunate that the beginning of your trip started off like this. I have been to OEW several times and have found it to be one of the best spots in the Carribean for diving. I absolutely adore the staff, they are always so helpful and friendly, especially Bryan. They are always very busy but somehow manage to make sure that everyone is looked after.

It is very disturbing that lights had to be put up to ward off vandals at night however out of bad things good can come....the lights to me would be a tremendous help when entering and exiting the water at night. I am sure that the OEW staff checked into all of the logistics of the lights and the coral spawning before adding them. The team is very involved in doing what they can to clean up and preserve the water, therefore I don't think they would do anything to harm the coral spawning. By the sound of Bryan's letter OEW seems to be targeted, making it difficult to keep the property safe from night time vandals so I would have to agree with their decision to install the lights. As a customer I believe that I will feel very secure doing night dives now even more then before knowing that the lights are there. I think if it was my boat out there I would do the same thing.

The beach shore is very rough but maybe if you talk to the staff you could buy your wife a pair of boots and fins. I find it way easier diving with that configuration over snorkel fins. She would have better propulsion and it would be easier for her to get out of the water in any and all situations. OEW has great brands and prices, and their stock is always full. Everytime I have been there someone has always had to make a purchase and they always have what we need.

I was really surprised to read that you hit the bottom when jumping off the dock. I seriously did not think that was possible. (are you sure you had inflated your bcd) I can't count how many times I have jumped in from there and never had a problem. Bad luck seemed to be following you. Do you own your own gear? If not maybe you should consider buying some and then you would not have to worry about rental gear. Although, once again, I have to say that the rental gear at OEW is fantastic stuff. It is all new and is serviced regularly, but it is still rental and sometimes things can happen that are unexplainable.

All in all I would have to say that how you feel about OEW is not the views shared by the vast majority of people I have spoken with. It is well known for it's professional, helpful and safety minded staff. There are so many great dive sites in the west end and the ever growing OEW is the best way to get to them. Heavy surge destroying docks and vandals destroying property are out of their control, but I do know that they will do whatever they can to make you safe and help you to enjoy your dives just like they do for so many others day in and day out

Sorry you did not read my post carefully. Just to make it clear - we own and carry ALL our own gear - from dry suites for cold water to lightweight travel gear. In case you did look at my profile, I might need to enhance it for you. Although I list my certification date as 2005, in reality that is mt recertification date since I could not find my YMCA card that I originally got in 1969. So I am not a novice nor is my wife. Since 2005 my wife has logged over 350 dives and I have just logged number 450.

This our 4th trip to LkH, so we know what (or thought we knew) what to expect and packed what we felt was appropriate gear. If we had known what was awaiting us, we would have packed differently.

I appreciate your concern that we might need help in our gear selection but I don't think that our gear is the problem.

We love Curacao and LKH and OEW or else we would not continue to come here. But surprises of this nature do put a damper on a trip and I don't want anyone else surprised.

Thanks again gor you concern.

The wine is for my wife - she does the design drawings. I can not drink, so the ice cream is for me. :D

We are still having a great trip.

I am 5'3" and something, something pounds. Some of the beach entries are challenging to say the least. I'm not sure how much shore diving you are planning on doing. There are some great sites with easy, sandy entries from the beach such as Cas Abao, Lagun and Porto Marie. I would not consider going to any of the other sites with out foot protection. Your options will unfortunately be limited based on that criteria alone.

The two platformed dock in front of OEW does make entry and exit much easier. Is it a deal breaker for me? No way. I have no onus in your grievance, but in all honesty, expecting OEW to contact everyone individually in advance about the lower tiered dock being out of commission seems a little unrealistic. You still had use of the pier, gear, rinse tank, shower and dive shop. Why should OEW proffer free use of dive boots and open heeled fins? Sorry, but planning a shore diving trip without packing the proper gear(i.e. foot protection) should not be blamed on OEW, nor should it be a reason to gripe about the dive op on a forum.

I honestly do wish you a nice vacation and hope you and your wife enjoy Curacao. I will not be on the island unti Jan.

Well said morecowbells. As an instructor I totally agree with everything you said.

I, too hope that TN traveler can have a great vacation. I won't be on the island untill November

Sorry MCB but Bryan posts quite often on Scubaboard - all I suggested was that he post the problem here - not contact me personally, although I did contact him within the past couple of weeks via PM and nothing was said about the situation.

As I stated before, we stay at LKH because of what used to be the very convenient shore diving - if we wanted to shore dive at other places on the island we would have packed accordingly. We come here so we can sleep late and dive on our schedule, not on a boat schedule. As you well know this place is for fun, relaxing diving - we do not plan it for a Bonaire type shore diving trip.

I did not ask or even suggest that OEW provide my wife with boots and fins, someone else suggested the do that - I said, if they did, I might accept. I have never asked for anything extra from them - only what the advertise and have always provided in the past - easy entry and exit for shore diving.

Several things I have recently noticed on this board - people are quick to blame
A poster for the problem without fully reading and comprehending what was written if it involves someone the consider a "friend" and they "assume" that the poster is an idiot and has no knowledge of diving and start to flame him/her.

So flame on!! It only makes you 2/3 of a$$ume.

Ok everyone... enough! This thread is not going anywhere.

Michael, if I knew the lower dock was going to be a real issue then you are right... I should have posted this fact! The fact is that as I mentioned it happens 2-3 times per year and lots of shore divers enter and exit from the beach, so to be honest I never gave it a second thought. Fortunately, we do not have two boats running this week because the second would be mooring against the side where the smaller dock was which to be honest with ropes, this is a safety hazard that I do not like which has also lead me to the conclusion of not replacing it.

Anyways, lets get together and have that wine and ice cream! I would appreciate that!

Today I am running around and then sailing the Palavos back to Westpunt. I should be arriving sometime around 5pm.

Thanks again and i will look forward to our conversation in person!

Until then...
