After a great day of diving, we ran into other divers at the dock. After asking where they had been, I got the whole story of how DEEP they went, what THEIR temps were, and of all things, how they dove a site that's, well, "pretty secret". Funny thing was, I've been quite a bit deeper, and actually bouyed their "secret wreck" this spring.

This isn't a first. We usually dive 5+ times per week, and it is common to find other divers that are trying to OUT DIVE you. I see it here even. Who's the better diver, what to do with a newbie, how deep have you gone, blah, blah, blah.... Usually, I find it amusing, but come on, it's getting a little tiring.

Can someone please explain to me what the point is of making yourself look better??? Cuz I'm just not gettin it.

Sorry, I can't help you, because I can't understand it either, but I make every effort to avoid diving with people who brag about the gazillion dives they have done, how deep they've been, or anything else.

If you shoot the bull with a bunch of runners, you hear it along the lines of how far they ran and how zen it all was. If you drink beer with mountain bikers it's all about how rugged their rigs are, and how steep and rocky the terrain was that they traversed. Same thing with off-roaders and 4-wheelers. If you hang with rafters or kayakers, its all about their boats or the river - how wicked the descents were after the thaw hit, etc.

And if you think that BC versus backplate and wing gets tedious, listen to a bunch of runners debate shoes. Sheesh.

The point is that its pretty universal. Just learn to roll your eyes and grin!

(When you get to be a high-speed low-drag teflon-coated diver like me, with lots of Special High-Intensity Training (!) Cards, then I'll show you my secret site...)

(Just kidding... ;) )

I'm just happy to get away and be neutral. Seeing something cool is a bonus and it happens often enough to be exciting.

When we were leaving Bonaire we met up with a couple in the airport. It was like 20 questions did you see a, frog fish, a sea horse, yada yada. Often times our answer was no and when we parted I didn't think any less of our adventure.

I see both frogs and fish on a daily basis! :p

And btw, my dad can beat up your dad.. Just so you know..

Over compensating for something else maybe...............something small?

Some people think that diving is a competition and you'll probably find that those same people are that way with just about everything else in their life too. It's hard to do but just try to ignore them. I think some people do things just for the sake of being able to say that they do it.

Scuba diving is a good example, how many times do the big talkers end up being the worst divers on the boat or the ones that care the least about what they damage while they are down there. In my observations they seem to be the most eager to dive again but the least interested in whats down there when they get there. It's like they just want to get this dive over with so we can go diving again.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????

And if you REALLY want to stir the kettle, just mention which certification agency you used to get your training. After that, let the chest thumpin' begin!

Gotta love it.

they have small.....nevermind :shakehead:
