I'm back! From where you may ask, well I was on a cruise since last week. First stop Key West and then over to Cozumel. A couple of my dive buddies got married on the ship while in port in Ft. Lauderdale and about 50 guests went on the crusie with them. Several folks were planning on diving when we got to Coz.
The bridge and groom and 6 others chartered 2 boats (4 divers each) and went diving in Coz on the reefs with Aldora divers. I hear they had a great time. Two other divers took a ferry from Coz to Akumal over on the mainland and went cave diving in the cenotes there. I made arrangements with a local instructor to guide me in 2 cave dives in Cozumel. Ya relaly, there are diveable caves on Cozumel even though it is an island. The site ow area was shallow, maybe 10' max, small basin, with salty water, mangroves, camin crocodile thing, but crystal clear water, very pretty. Kinda reminded me of Florida. This was my first time diving in a halocline (where fresh and salt water mixes). My buddy suddenly became blurry til all I could see was the blue glow of his light. Freaky stuff. oh and since this cave had salt water in it as well, there was sea life. Some brittle starfish thingys. Reminded me of something out of Beetlejuice. All I saw in the silty bottom were these black and white thin legs that would squirm into a hole when I shined my light on them. First dive was 32' for 36 mins. The main line was way far into the system. Way past the cavern zone. It took us 11 mins to run the real and tie into the main line.
Second dive it took us only 3 mins to get to where we had tied off onto the main line. We got to a point where the line dropped from 30' to 60' into a tighter section. 10 ceiling, single file type of diving. No halocline. Saw some stalagmites and stalagtites, the walls were black, the floor was all these broken pieces of rock that looked like, gee I don't know how to describe it. It was cool though. Oh ya and through out the cave were this white squiggly lines, well these were the old tube worm things ( I need to learn my animal terms better). A couple of times i saw the little feather duster kinda worm thing sticking out of them. This dive was max depth 59' for 72 mins. We explored the cavern znoe some before surfacing. (In case anyone is interested I went with www.divecozumel.net and dived with Roly).
The only bad part was we surfaced from the second dive to find the truck had been broken into. Busted out window. Took my guides buddy's dive gear in his truck, and took my backpack. Nothing really of value. My friends were surprised I was as calm as I was. But I wasn't going to let something like that ruin my perfect trip you know.
So I got back into Florida this afternoon, took care of some stuff regarding the vehicle burglary. and finally relaxing. Sometimes I feel like I need a vacation from my vacation. I ate way too much. I had a great time. Anyone that hasn't been on a cruise, I recommend it. They even had a rock wall on the back of the ship.
