Hi all,

I just received my Ikelite D300 housing and port today. It looks amazing however rather larger than I thought.

My question is how do you recommend me travelling with this? I go to Maldives on Thursday and dont want to cause any damage to the housing!

Thanks

Lee

Lee,

You might get better answers in the photo section, but for my part, I have the same housing for a Canon 5D, so I'm betting about the same size.

Rather than cough up for an expensive Pelican case or similar, I use a soft-sided beer bag like these and then put that in either a generic hard sided suitcase or a Coleman beer Eskie like these.

Add strap and lock and you're laughing.

For packing, bubble wrap is cheap and easy to get hold of.

Oh, and the hard case can double-up as a rinse tank post-dive :cool2:

Oh #2, when you come back from holiday and stow your gear away (rinse those buttons thoroughly, in fresh water before storing by the way), rumour has it that you can even use these beauties for keeping beer cold, which is

I miss beer.

I'll go ditto with hammerhead's suggestion. I just completed a trip where I took my new Ike along and it was my first time travelling with UW camera gear. I used the Pelican wheelie case but I actually found it more troublesome than good. The Pelican case is very heavy and you won't get a lot of gear in it before you reach the max weight for carry-on. The Peli is also too large to meet the dimensional restrictions of some domestic airlines. Virgin Blue is one. Also the case advertises that there are nice goodies inside to steal (if one were to check it). I really like the Esky idea.

UK has an equivalent sized wheelie that is 2 lbs lighter. If you want to go that route this is the better pick IMO.

On my next trip I think I will check my camera gear (it's insured for loss)and carry-on only the things that cannot be replaced..ie those components that carry data such as dive computers, camera chips etc (and the camera too). The other thing I will carry-on will be the regs. Inspections happen and I do not want some homeland security type fiddling with my reg unless I happen to be there to witness it. Heard a not so good story lately about a reg that came apart underwater after a baggage check. Can't be proved but the inspector may have disassembled the second stage looking for who knows what. The second stage subsequently fell apart during a dive causing a dramatic moment for the user and his buddy. Sorry I digressed here.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Bill

A lot of my posts are beer-related. Especially since I moved to a "dry" country...

Hey I live in a "Dry" country too - but in reality its wetter than my native UK - and its always raining there :)

Where you live?

Libya, for my sins (which are legion).

Local hooch doesn't kill you, but the headaches are merciless, and the imported stuff is over $120 a bottle.

Don't know a thing about the Ike housing...I built my own housing for my video camera. The only thing of my post that relates to the topic (sorry to be rambling...It's Monday, and my mind is wandering) is about traveling with it by air. You know, my PVC and plexiglass and battery operated controls contraption looks just like a pipe bomb when X-rayed? That little "sniffer" booth is fun, especially while you're standing there in your bare feet with your pockets turned out.

But it does take great video, though.

Try getting cannister lights into Libya!
