Hey Sarg.

I think you have 3 choices:

1) Use dive log software if you have a dive computer that has download capabilities. I use a Suunto D9 and it has the Suunto Dive Manager software.

2) Use a website - I know that padi.com has the ability to track your dives in your "My Padi" profile.

3) Find an excel template someone may have created before or create your own. I've seen people use PocketPCs or Treo devices to store their dive log.

Hope this helps.

OldSarg:
I am looking for a computer based log system and ws wondering what was the most popular.

I use Dive Log 4.0 and think it is great. Download the free copy and use it for a while to see if you like it. I have an AI computer that downloads all the information directly to the program. I have been very happy with it, great program for a small price and has great support if you have any issues.

I created mine in Excel. Log what I want to log and crunches what I want to crunch. I can make out my writing and I can replace the hardcopy version at will.

Remember that a log is your record of your diving, your experieinces and learnings so make it do what you want it to do. I find golfballs and I have a frame for that. It keeps a running total for the year. That's just 1 example.

I do not count on my computer download utility as my log nor do I believe in doing so. Niche market software is too under-evolved and it's amtter of time before I need to migrate to another package so it's not in for the long haul.

As a finance type Excel should be a snap and a freebie.

For those using AI computers you waste a great deal of its capabilities when you don't download the information. Some software may be niche market but the good thing about Dive Log is it uses Microsoft Access to store its information. This could be used with numerous applications even if you didn't want to continue to use their software. Also, no one should rely on software alone no matter which method they choose. Good backups and hard copies are the only way to go. I have no stake in the software, just a satisfied user.

It is vital to remember that the log is YOURS. Make it, buy it, doesn't matter. I'm kind of anal about logging so I use the Dive Log 4.0, and was using my own Excel versioon, but always use my paper copy as well. I also have tried the PADI PDA log. Didn't like that one too well, but there are others fro PDAs and handheld computers as well. As long as you have records.

I do too. I then "print to Adobe Acrobat" and maintain my logbook as a PDF.
