First a reminder of how ordinary hardware stores sell paint:

Customer: Hi. How much is your paint?
Clerk: We have regular quality paint for $18 a litre and premium paint for $25. How many litres would you like?

Customer: Five litres of regular paint please.
Clerk: Great. That will be $90 please.

Now, imagine you are buying paint from an airline:

Customer: Hi. How much is your paint?
Clerk: Well, sir, that all depends on quite a lot of things.

Customer: Can you give me a guess? Is there an average price?
Clerk: Our lowest price is $12 a litre, and we have up to 60 different prices.

Customer: What's the difference in the paint?
Clerk: Oh, there isn't any difference; it's all the same paint.

Customer: Well, then I'd like some of that $12 paint.
Clerk: When do you intend to use the paint?

Customer: I want to paint tomorrow. It's my day off.
Clerk: Sir, the paint for tomorrow is the $200 paint.

Customer: When would I have to paint to get the $12 paint?
Clerk: You would have to start very late at night in about 3 weeks. But you will have to agree to start painting before Friday of that week and continue painting until at least Sunday.

Customer: You've got to be kidding!
Clerk: I'll check and see if we have any paint available.

Customer: You have shelves FULL of paint! I can see it!
Clerk: But it doesn't mean that we have paint available. We sell only a certain number of litres on any given weekend. Oh, and by the way, the price per litre just went to $16. We don't have any more $12 paint.

Customer: The price went up as we were talking?
Clerk: Yes, sir. We change the prices and rules hundreds of times a day and since you haven't actually walked out of the store with your paint yet, we just decided to change. I suggest you purchase your paint as soon as possible. How many litres do you want?

Customer: Well, maybe five litres. Make that six, so I'll have enough.
Clerk: Oh no, sir, you can't do that. If you buy paint and don't use it, there are penalties and possible confiscation of the paint you already have.

Customer: WHAT?
Clerk: We can sell enough paint to do your kitchen, bathroom, hall and north bedroom, but if you stop painting before you do the bedroom, you will lose your remaining litres of paint.

Customer: What does it matter whether I use all the paint? I already paid you for it!
Clerk: We make plans based upon the idea that all our paint is used, every drop. If you don't, it causes us all sorts of problems.

Customer: This is crazy!! I suppose something terrible happens if I don't keep painting until after Saturday night!
Clerk: Oh yes! Every litre you bought automatically becomes the $200 paint.

Customer: But what are all these "Paint on sale from $10 a litre" signs?
Clerk: Well, that's for our budget paint. It only comes in half-litres. One $5 half-litre will do half a room. The second half-litre to complete the room is $20. None of the cans have labels, some are empty and there are no refunds, even on the empty cans.

Customer: To hell with this! I'll buy what I need somewhere else!
Clerk: I don't think so, sir. You may be able to buy paint for your bathroom and bedrooms, and your kitchen and dining room from someone else, but you won't be able to paint your connecting hall and stairway from anyone but us. And I should point out sir, that if you paint in only one direction, it will be $300 a litre.

Customer: I thought your most expensive paint was $200!
Clerk: That's if you paint around the room to the point at which you started. A hallway is different.

Customer: And if I buy $200 paint for the hall, but only paint in one direction, you'll confiscate the remaining paint.
Clerk: No, we'll charge you an extra use fee plus the difference on your next litre of paint. But I believe you're getting it now, sir.

Customer: You're insane!

Clerk: But we're the only paint supplier in the area! Thanks for painting with Scam Air.

How very true to life ;) I hate buying plane tickets for those very reasons.

I love it!! I have never been able to figure out the airline industry. It appears to ignore all the basic principles of business, as the above illustrates. Although I did just book rt Philly to San Diego over the Thanksgiving holiday for $200, that is if USAir is still flying...

What about car salesmen tried to sell paint. I think that could get just as confusing:

Customer: Hi. How much is your paint?
Clerk: Well, sir, that all depends on quite a lot of things.

Customer: I saw your adverts in the paper saying you sold paint at $12 a can, do have any of that?
Clerk: We have advertised a special recent at that price, would you like to see that paint?

Customer: Yes, please show me that paint.
Clerk: Here is the paint sir, how much of this would you like?

Customer: I would like 5 cans please.
Clerk: Ok, i will have to take you back to our financial advisor. (goes off to talk for a moment with financial advisor)

Advisor: Hi, take a seat, i see that you would like to buy 5 cans of paint at our special promotional price of $12 a can.
Customer: Yes that's right.

Advisor: Can you fill out this paperwork and we will try to process you within an hour.
Customer: Cant i just buy the paint and leave?

Advisor: No sir, we have to ensure that you are financially capable of buying this paint at this special low price. Once we process you, we will know if we can offer this to you or have to put a payment plan down for you.
Customer: If it means i will get the paint sooner, i will do it.

Advisor: Well i have you up here now, looks like your credit isnt in such great shape, we cant offer you the paint at $12 a can, how about $14 a can and you can pay it off at a 10% interest rate for 5 years?
Customer: Didnt realise it was that much to buy this stuff, so thats going to be $70 for all 5 cans now. But if i have to pay $70 that is how much i will have to pay.

Advisor: Yes sir, so we agree on this price now, can you sign here?
[Customer signs]

Advisor: now you have signed let me tell you of the added extras, you have to buy the cans at $2 a piece, carrying handles for the cans at $1 a piece, brushes and other maintenance are available for an extra fee and of course we can add in an anti-spillage device and protection should your paint devalue over the time you intend to use it. Then of course we add on registration fees of $20, our fee $40 and taxes at 8%, which makes a grand total of $156.6 plus any coverage as i mentioned just now.
Customer: Why didnt you tell me about all these extras beforehand when we agreed the price??????????

I wont go into how a politician sells paint ;)

simbrooks:
I wont go into how a politician sells paint ;)
Well maybe i will seeing as i have time on my hands at work and am kind of bored:

Customer: Hi. How much is your paint?
Clerk: If you should buy this paint from me i can promise you that i will cut the price from the regular retail price of $20 that the other stores around here offer down to $10 a can. That is a substantial lower than my rivals up the road. They offer an inferior product AND want to take more money out of your pocket for it, twice the amount i can offer it to you for! Should you choose my establishment to be in charge of your purchasing needs, we will see that you only get the best and greatest paint that money can buy and at a fraction of the cost of our competitors.

Customer: That sounds great, i would like 5 cans.
Clerk: That is wonderful sir, please mark your acceptance on this ballot and i will see that i fulfil what i have promised as soon as i get into the office.

Customer: So how much is that altogether?
Clerk: $50 and it is tax deductible as it is a campaign contribution!

Customer: This sounds much better deal than the shop i have been using. Thanks for the great service and price!!!
[Customer pays and Clerk walks off]

Customer: Dont i get the cans of paint now?
Clerk: Not quite yet sir, we have to count your bills and then once i get into my office i will deliver on our agreement in 3 weeks, the paint will be delivered i assure you of that - just remember the great price and how worthwhile it will be to have paint so cheaply when you get it.

[Customer leaves and waits, 3 weeks pass, no paint, goes back to the store]

Customer: So where is my paint??
Clerk: I am sorry sir, you put down a deposit on some paint, but didnt pay in full, so we didnt send it to you.

Customer: What do you mean, a downpayment, not paid in full??? 3 weeks ago you told me that you could give me the paint at $10 a can and i ordered 5 cans, so where are they?
Clerk: I never stated such a rediculously low price, that is below my invoice price, i can however ask you to pay the remaining amount to buy the paint at our regular price which is another $10 a can on top of your downpayment plus sales tax.

Customer: You promised that you would sell me the paint at $10 a can and that you gave better service and sold a better product for less than the place down the road. You also said that the payment before was tax deductible, no you are saying i have to pay tax on it - do you even remember our conversation?
Clerk: Sir, we have to pay tax as the government requires it from us to provide services that benefit the whole country, i would not offer such a sale to you without sales tax. If you would have gone to my competitor down the road he would have duped you into paying far more than i am offering you and a far lower quality of product. You did the right thing coming to me.

Customer: You lying, corrupt, deceiptful, cheating, two timing, low-life, ivy league college grad piece of.......!

[Customer leaves store and visits friend, who he tells the story to]
Friend: You realise that whichever store you went to, they both would have messed you around and promised you things and not come through on them.

BTW, not aimed at any particular politician, the whole lot of them are like that IMO, mods delete if you see it is over TOS, even if only a joke ;)

Hell, don't feel bad, I've been in the airline industry for over 20 years and haven't been able to figure out ticketing in all of that time. Of course, we don't get to see the "Big Picture" either! :11:

Selling paint by the gallon you never have this issue.

Another reason to kill your BAR rig and dive imperial.
