We have a 14 month old child but would love to get away for some diving on our next holiday (in August/September) - long boat rides and full days are difficult to coordinate and so my wife and I we looking for somewhere in Asia where we could do some great diving either as shore dives or short boat rides from a resort/beach town. Any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

Another possibility is Tulamben on the NE coast of Bali. There are three really good shore dives here, and for a little variety, you can get a short boat ride down to Seraya, where the dives are also reputed to be very good.

The entry and exits on two of those dives - the Liberty Wreck and Coral Gardens - are a bit of a hassle due to the boulders that line the beach and extend maybe 5+ meters into the water (it's not a sandy beach).

There are several resorts in Tulamben. I've twice stayed at Tauch Terminal and would recommend it. Mimpi is also pretty nice. Both of these are oceanfront. A short hop away from the beach, across the road, is Tulamben Wreck Divers, run by Tony Medcraft, an Aussie Expat. His prices are quite reasonable compared to the oceanfront resorts.

August/September is prime Mola-Mola (Oceanic Sunfish) season in Bali, but your best chance to see them is in Nusa Penida, on the SE side of Bali. This would be a full day trip, but the experience is pretty unique if you get to see them.

The Maldives is a great destination. Some time ago we took our 18month old son there and stayed on one of the islands, we took turns to dive and stayed in a fantastic room. Our boy loved it and it was a really relaxing and wonderful time for all of us.
We were able to shore dive on a the house reef and also went out on the boats that were scheduled for morning and afternoon dives. A member of staff came to our room to look after our son so we could dive together at times too.
We stayed on Sonevafushi in Baa atoll but there are around 200 Maldives resort islands to choose from......August and September are a good time for mantas in the Maldives but you need to choose your island carefully to ensure you are on the right side of the atoll for the best diving.
